Chapter 162 - To The Village
After about an hour of driving the horse a little hard, Ren stopped the cart to give the horse a rest.
“Why are we stopping?” Elerlyth asked. “Aren't we almost there?”
“We're almost to the edge of the County, but the village is on the other side of it; right on the border to the next Principality.”
“You're kidding.”
“No.” Ren said. “Whoever had the bright idea to build it right along the edge, and spread out to boot, was an idiot.”
“It could have been randomly generated.” Elerlyth said.
Ren chuckled. “Then the algorithm used is completely flawed. The village is made in three rows, a quarter of a mile long. There's no wall surrounding it. There's no river nearby... and the villagers have to travel a mile to get to the farmland they need to use, just to feed themselves.”
“Okay, even I have to admit that's pretty stupid.” She said and smiled.
“Oh, it gets better.” Ren said. “There's a population of 796 people, and 646 of that is in the village. The other 150 is spread out over the 50 square miles.”
“Wow.”
“I'm not done.” He said. “There's 2300 chickens, 1100 cows, and 300 pigs.”
“No way!” Elerlyth said. “How do they feed them all?”
“They don't.” Ren said. “There's also 13 butchers, and... get this... 61 bakers.”
Elerlyth's eyes widened. “Chicken Pot Pie.”
Ren laughed again. “That's my guess from the numbers of production.” He said. “The fields grow wheat; half to make dough and half to feed the chickens. Keep three quarters of the chickens for eggs; use half of those eggs to eat and grow the other half, then chop up the chickens that are left.”
“Good god.” She said. “They must be sick of eating chicken!”
“Assuming they don't change how they cook it, yeah.” Ren said, then looked at the horse. “Okay, I think we can head out now.”
They went to the cart and climbed in.
“Why don't you drive.” Ren said. “I want to check my stats.”
Elerlyth nodded and took the reins.
“Show Status.” Ren said, and looked at the popup.
