Chapter 159 - It's Over
For the next 3 hours, after the encounter in the town square, Ren worked hard to quell all of the persistent fires, with Elerlyth protecting him and Teepo scouting. Nearly every home was damaged in some way, and Ren was a little worried that a lot of the homes would need to be torn down and replaced. Unfortunately, he came across an entire row of homes that were so close together and next to the wall, that the fire could spread no further and had consumed them almost completely. Ren built a small cart to hold the remains of a man and a woman that he'd found, and covered them with a large piece of cloth. He pulled the cart to the town square and turned it over to the soldiers, since he didn't know what else to do with it. Ren told them where he'd found them, and hoped that they could be identified so that their families could be told.
Elerlyth took his hand and led him up the street towards the Artesian District, his happy mood dampened just as much as the fire now was. The soldiers had saved the homes around the Market District, and the Leisure District was barely touched. Smoke permeated the air, and soot covered everything. Ren walked normally, and Elerlyth kept an eye out in case there was any looters still around. When they got to the corner to go down the street his business was on, he looked up the street and saw the Housing District.
“We better check the Housing District.” Ren said. “I'm pretty sure the houses there are far enough away from anything that was close to the fires; but, it's better to be safe than sorry.”
“You're not doing it just to check on Lucy, are you?” Elerlyth asked.
Ren sighed. “I care about what happens to her, but there's at least one other house there.”
“As long as you're honest to yourself about your reasons.” She said, and Ren smiled.
“You know how I feel about her, Elerlyth.” Ren said as they walked the rest of the way to the Housing District. “I've got no reason to lie to you about it.”
“I'm not trying to poke your Lucy complex, Ren.” Elerlyth put an arm around his shoulders. “I can feel how anxious you are, though.”
Ren sighed. “Yeah.”
When they got to the district, he wasn't surprised to see only the two houses there. He checked the closest one first, and there was no answer. There was a light on inside, and he frowned.
Teepo? Ren thought, and Teepo flew down and landed on the door frame. He squeezed into the crack and Ren waited for a minute.
“There's someone in here.” Teepo said. “It looks like she's collapsed on the floor.”
Ren used his Iron Grip to crush the door handle, pushed the door open, and ran inside. He went into the living room and saw a woman face down on the floor. He rolled her over and was surprised to see Elise, the secretary from Sid Tec. Ren looked at her chest, and it wasn't moving so he laid her on her back. He tilted her head back, and performed CPR on her. It was difficult to find a good spot to do the chest compressions, since her chest was so big; but once he had undone the top half of her blouse, he managed to get the heels of his hands wedged between her breasts. He blew air into her mouth, and repeated the chest compressions several times. He blew air into her mouth again, and she started coughing. Ren tasted smoke and ash, and she opened her eyes.
“Ugh... what... what happened?” Elise asked.
“What do you remember?” Ren asked
“I was engulfed in smoke outside, and found my way back inside... then... then... I don't know.” Elise rubbed her chest where he had worked on her, then she blinked a few times as she stared at Ren. “Am I dead?” She asked, and Ren smiled.
“Far from it.” He said. “Your chest is sore because I had to perform CPR to revive you.”
Elise gasped and put a hand on her mouth. His... his lips were on mine, and I missed it!
Ren took out his Major Healing wand and used it on her. Elise felt better instantly, and her eyes widened.
“You saved me.” She looked at him in wonder. “Now you've healed me.”
“It's all in a day's work, Ma'am.”
Elise got up from the floor, but stayed on her knees. She was the same height as Ren like that, and she wrapped her arms around him.
“Thank you very much.” Elise said in a silky voice, and leaned close to kiss him gently. She hissed slightly as the top of her exposed chest touched the hot metal of his armor, but she kissed him anyways. Elise let him out of the hug and leaned back, then looked down to see her top was undone. She put a hand on the slight burn and winced.
“Your armor is quite hot.” Elise said. “I seem to have burned myself.”
“I'm so sorry!” Ren said, and took out a Minor Healing wand and used it on the burn. “There. Is that better?”
“Yes, that's much better.” Elise said, and ran her hand through his hair. “My little hero.”
Ren blinked at her a few times, and didn't know what to say; then he heard Elerlyth cough.
“Sorry to interrupt, but 'your little hero' needs to get his butt down the street to check the other house.” Elerlyth said, and Ren chuckled.
“I'm glad you're feeling better...” Ren said to Elise. “...but, I have to go.”
Elise nodded. “Thank you again for saving me.” She said. “I'll... I'll call you tomorrow.”
“You don't have to do that.” Ren said. “We've got the fire out now. You should be safe if you stay inside.”
“I meant I'd call about the show.” Elise laughed. “We have a lot to discuss.”
“Right!” Ren said and walked to the doorway. “I'll look forward to hearing from you.”
Elise waved and Ren followed Elerlyth out to the front door, and Ren repaired the door handle and shut it after Teepo flew out through it.

Elise stood up, then sat down on the couch. “I finally got to kiss him.” She sighed as she touched her lips, then looked down at her half-open blouse. She ran a hand over the soft exposed skin and smiled. “I think... I think almost dying was worth it.”
*
“Did you have fun fondling those huge melons?” Elerlyth asked teasingly, and Ren's face flushed a little red. She fed on his feeling of embarrassment; but, she felt guilty about doing so. I shouldn't tease him like that. She reached out a hand and rubbed the back of his neck. “I'm sorry. I know you didn't do that.” Her eyes widened as she almost choked on the flood of relief that came from him.
“I wasn't even thinking about what could have happened when I opened her blouse like that.” Ren said. “I just needed to get access to her chest.”
Elerlyth smiled as the embarrassment came back. He looked at her and grinned.
“Boy, did that sound horrible or what?”
“It did, but I know what you meant.” Elerlyth laughed. “I watched you. You were very respectable.”
Ren nodded. “Now that I think about it... I wonder what kind of back problems she has.”
“W-what?”
“With that much weight on her front, it's got to put a lot of strain on her back muscles.”
Elerlyth snorted a laugh. “Leave it to you to wonder what her back feels like, while thinking about her breasts.”
Ren laughed, and they walked up to the front door of the other house. Teepo.
Teepo went inside and flew around to check everything. “There's no one here.”
“Teepo says it's empty.” Ren said. “Let's get back to the business.”
Elerlyth nodded and they walked down the street and around the lumberyard to get back to the business.
*
“We haven't found anyone else in a while.” The low level fighter said. “Should we head back to where we got the quest?”
“Yes, that's a good idea.” The dark figure said. “We might find someone else along the way.”
*
Selene looked at her party members. “Well, it seems none of you managed to kill yourselves.”
Several of them laughed.
“Yeah, we tried really hard, too.” One of the said. “I'm down to about half of my Health.”
“I wanted to see if I could still get the XP if I did die.” Another said. “I've got 10% Health left.”
“I could kill you, and we can find out.”
The guy laughed. “No killing innocents, remember?”
“You're not innocent.” His friend said. “You spend a good portion of your normal game time at the Jiggly Puff.”

“You only know that because you're right there beside me.”
“I didn't claim to be innocent, you mook.”
An arrow shot out from an alley and swiped by Selene's head, clipping her hair. Several strands fell to the ground and she whipped around, furious.
“You just messed up my HAIR!” She yelled and charged the figure that had fired at her. He started to run, but she caught him easily and sliced the back of his leg. He dropped to the ground, and she did a cartwheel over him, stabbed his back with the swords, and landed at his head.
“You can't kill me!” He said. “I know things!”
Selene had a manic look in her eyes as she lifted both swords.
“Hey! I said I know who did it! Arrest me! I'll tell you every-GLLGGG!!”
His words were cut off, along with the top of his head. The swords were embedded into the ground several inches, and she worked them from side to side and pulled them free.
“No one touches my hair.” Selene said, and calmed down. She looted the body and picked up a dozen gold coins, and a small black disc. What the hell is this? She thought as she put the coins in her coin pouch, then put the shadow marker into her inventory. That's the worst loot I've picked up tonight.
*
The last 2 quest players had hidden out in an abandoned building for most of the night.
“Did you see how many of them there were?” One guy said.
“Yeah.” The other guy said. “I can't believe we accepted this quest.”
“Me, either.” The guy said. “But we got a sword and shield out of it, and we didn't have to do anything!”
The other guy grinned. “I'm sure we can sell them for a lot.”
“Sell them? Are you joking?” The guy asked. “You can't find stuff like this anywhere.”
“Yeah, and someone will pay a lot to get it.”
The guy snorted a laugh. “You'd sell your mother if she was in here.”
The other guy punched him in the face. “Hey, she doesn't do that anymore!”
“Geezus! It was a joke, man!” The guy said. “I meant you'd sell her away, not sell her like that.”
“Oh.” The other guy said. “That wasn't funny.”
They heard wood creak and went on alert. The other guy pointed to the back of the room and the doorway, and they crept in separate directions towards the opening. They saw a lone guy, beaten and pretty trashed, push open the mangled door. He stumbled in and dropped to the floor.
“I... I made it.” He said. “At least... at least one of us... got away... from that... thing...”
The two guys looked at each other and went into the room.
“He... help...” The hurt guy said. “I'll... I'll pay...”
The other guy grinned. “Yes, you will.” He stabbed the hurt guy in the chest with the sword. The body slumped to the floor and then a moment later, it dissolved. Several gold and silver coins appeared, and a sword.
