Mythran's Master Of All

Chapter 24 - A Forgotten Friend

Ren felt multiple things poking his legs and woke up startled. When he opened his eyes, one of the dog-sized caterpillars was standing on top of him and eating his tent.“Ahhh!”There was no reaction at all from the creature.“Hey! HEY! Stop that!” Ren tried to push it, but it didn't budge at all. He was being slowly trampled under it's slowly moving legs. A quarter of his health was already gone. Ren shifted his body a little as it moved, and tried to turn to his side. He tried to become a much smaller target. It kind of worked, but the caterpillar's pointy legs hooked his pants and pinned him to the ground. At least it wasn't on his legs anymore. With nothing else to do, Ren watched the creature eat. Unlike with the sunflowers, that the caterpillars gobbled up faster than they could chew, this caterpillar took a small bite of the tent and chewed and chewed, until it finally swallowed and took another bite. Ren assumed that the sheer toughness of the fabric was giving the thing a really hard time. He guessed it must have been there nearly all night, since almost half of the tent was now missing. It hadn't gotten to the bolt of fabric holding the tent up, thank goodness. That would have been a horrible loss!Just then the caterpillar stopped eating, let out a big belch, and turned around. It trampled Ren some more, taking even more of his health, and tried to disappear into a hole right in front of the tent. It didn't get far, though. It was apparently much fatter now than when it first made the hole, and got stuck most of the way in. It's backside was sticking out and wiggled helplessly.“Serves you right, you little tent muncher!” Ren said and laughed.Ren watched it struggle for a minute and felt a little sympathy for it. It was technically Ren's fault for giving it such a big meal, even if it wasn't what Ren had intended the tent to be used for. Even though it's legs were used to dig, since they were pinned to it's side, it couldn't dig at all.“All right, hold on. I'll help.” Ren took out his mining pick and in short order dug the hole a little wider without hurting the caterpillar. He saw that the hole was only a few feet deep. The caterpillar fit into the wider hole easily. It turned around a couple of times. Ren thought it was making sure there was enough room for it, and then it spun a quick cover over the hole.“Hey, you're welcome!” Ren said.Ren looked around but couldn't see any other caterpillars. What he did see was the remnants of his tent. He sighed and put away his bedroll and the bolt of fabric. He wasn't sure what to do with the tent. He could probably leave it here and it would get eaten eventually, but he had no idea what it would do to the caterpillars. What if they choked on it or got sick? He gathered what was left of the tent and put it in his inventory. It made him think about the caterpillar he'd just helped. What's going to happen to it now that it had eaten so much? He'd better stick around to see what the results would be. He hoped all that would happen is the caterpillar would just pop back out to keep eating sunflowers. He could hear some of the others nearby doing just that.Ren knew he had some time to waste anyways, so he took out his alchemy kit and prepared the Vial of Poison recipe. He still had the weak poison potions from his first time at the old man's place. He got his mortar and pestle and ground up one of the poison glands he had left. He dropped in a potency berry, crushed them together, and poured the mixture into a bowl. He put in the weak poison potion and mixed them together. He very carefully poured it back into the potion bottle.
