The Retired Young Mercenary Is Secretly a Billionaire

Chapter 408: The longest night in Haven!!!!

Night settled quietly over Belvoir.

The Winslow Estate had already fallen into silence.

The distant mountains were barely visible beyond the dark windows, and a cool breeze passed through the gardens outside.

Inside one of the guest bedrooms, Chloe stretched comfortably beneath the blanket.

She looked toward Miles, who was adjusting his pillow for what felt like the fourth time.

"It was fun."

Miles glanced toward her.

Chloe smiled.

"The tea plantations were beautiful."

She looked toward the window, almost as if she could still see the endless green slopes from earlier that afternoon.

"So calm."

"So peaceful."

"The breeze was amazing."

Then her smile widened.

"And the home cooked food..."

Miles laughed.

"I knew that would make the list."

"It was delicious."

Chloe turned onto her side.

"And Ivy is adorable."

Miles nodded.

"She is."

Chloe smiled.

"I understand why Olivia loves having her around."

Miles finally finished arranging the pillow.

Then looked toward Chloe.

"Well..."

She raised an eyebrow.

"From tomorrow..."

He leaned back comfortably.

"It’ll only be us."

Chloe immediately grinned.

"You and me?"

"Exactly."

She narrowed her eyes.

"What are you planning, Mr. Sterling?"

Miles smiled mysteriously.

"Not telling."

Chloe frowned.

"Not fair."

Miles moved closer.

"What isn’t fair?"

Chloe immediately turned away from him.

"Nothing."

Miles leaned closer again.

"Tell me."

"No."

"Chloe."

She pulled the blanket higher.

"Let’s sleep."

Miles stared at her back.

"We have a flight in the morning."

"Ehhh..."

Miles dropped back onto the pillow dramatically.

Chloe’s shoulders shook slightly.

She was clearly laughing.

Miles sighed.

"Fine."

He pulled the blanket up.

"Good night."

Chloe smiled without turning around.

"Good night."

Miles gently adjusted the blanket over her shoulder.

A few minutes later...

The room became silent.

...

Midnight.

Miles opened his eyes.

There was no sleepiness in them.

No confusion.

No slow waking.

It was almost as if he had never truly fallen asleep.

The room remained dark except for a faint light slipping through the curtains.

Miles slowly turned his head.

Chloe was sleeping peacefully beside him.

Her breathing was soft.

Steady.

Miles watched her for a moment.

Then gently moved one hand over her hair.

Chloe shifted slightly.

Her lips moved.

"Not fair..."

Miles froze.

Then smiled.

Even asleep...

She was apparently still arguing with him.

Miles whispered,

"Have some rest."

He gently moved the hair away from her face.

Then slowly climbed out of bed.

He dressed quietly.

No unnecessary movement.

No sound.

Before leaving, he looked back once more.

Chloe hadn’t moved.

Miles opened the door.

Then disappeared into the hallway.

...

The living room lights were already on.

Olivia sat near the center table.

Thea was beside her.

Clarissa sat across from them.

All three looked toward the staircase as Miles appeared.

He checked the time.

"Am I late?"

Clarissa shook her head.

"Not really."

She stood.

"We already prepared everything."

Olivia picked up her phone.

"Grandpa called."

Miles looked toward her.

"He said everything is ready."

She stood as well.

"Let’s go."

Miles raised an eyebrow.

Olivia smiled.

"We only have to walk a little."

"His private residence is inside the estate property."

She looked almost excited.

"Honestly, you’re lucky."

Miles laughed.

"Why?"

Olivia folded her arms.

"I’ve lived around this family my entire life."

"And I was never allowed inside."

She shook her head.

"Now I finally get to see it."

Thea looked toward her.

"He never talked about it?"

Olivia immediately looked at Thea.

"Not really."

Then she smiled awkwardly.

"Actually..."

"It feels like you know more about Grandpa than I do."

Thea blinked.

"Oh."

Clarissa stood.

"Let’s move."

Her expression became more serious.

"Tonight is going to be historic."

Miles looked toward her.

"For Haven."

Clarissa nodded.

Miles took a breath.

"Let’s go."

...

The four stepped outside.

The estate was nearly silent.

Only a few security lights remained on along the pathways.

Several men were already waiting at a distance.

Lucian’s people.

They approached without a word.

One of them bowed.

"Everything is prepared."

Miles nodded.

The group moved through a less traveled part of the property.

Past gardens.

Past a stone wall.

Then through a narrow path hidden behind tall trees.

Eventually...

A private residence appeared.

It was smaller than the main Winslow mansion.

Far less decorative.

Almost deliberately ordinary.

But the security around it told a different story.

Hidden cameras.

Encrypted locks.

Reinforced doors.

And enough concealed surveillance to make the building feel more like a bunker than a home.

Olivia stared.

"Grandpa..."

She slowly looked around.

"What exactly have you been doing all these years?"

Clarissa smiled.

"I think we’re about to find out."

They entered.

The interior looked simple.

But they didn’t remain on the upper floor.

One of Lucian’s men led them toward a concealed door.

Then down a staircase.

Another security door opened.

Olivia stopped.

Her eyes widened.

A full war room stretched beneath the residence.

Large screens covered the walls.

A digital map of the Republic of Haven dominated the center.

Multiple cities were highlighted.

Citadel.

Star Harbor.

Silverline.

Other strategic zones.

Communication channels were already open.

Maps.

Government facilities.

Horizon Biotech locations.

Financial districts.

Communication infrastructure.

Military routes.

Everything was displayed.

Olivia slowly whispered,

"I never knew this place existed."

A familiar elderly voice came through one of the screens.

"Olivia."

She immediately looked up.

Lucian appeared on the main display.

He was connected from the island facility near Star Harbor.

Olivia blinked.

"Grandpa."

Lucian looked slightly embarrassed.

"Sorry for hiding things from you."

Olivia looked around once more.

Then smiled.

"Don’t worry."

She sat down.

"Your secret is safe with me."

Lucian smiled faintly.

Olivia added,

"You’re cool as always."

A quiet laugh came from Lucian.

"Thank you for understanding."

Then his eyes shifted.

"Thea."

The room became quieter.

Thea stepped closer to the screen.

"Grandmaster."

For several seconds...

Lucian didn’t speak.

Then his expression softened.

"I’m sorry."

Thea looked toward him.

"For everything you had to endure because of me."

Thea shook her head.

"It’s okay."

Lucian looked down.

"No."

"It’s not."

His voice became heavier.

"I used your life."

"I put you inside that organization."

"I told myself it was necessary."

"I told myself I was protecting Ivy."

"But the truth is..."

He sighed.

"...I took years away from you."

Thea remained silent.

Lucian continued,

"I should never have asked that much."

Thea looked toward him.

"You kept your promise."

Lucian stopped.

Thea continued,

"You protected Ivy."

"You gave her a home."

"You kept her away from all of this."

Her eyes softened.

"I’m the one who couldn’t fulfill mine."

Lucian immediately shook his head.

"You have done more than enough."

Thea smiled faintly.

"Then let’s stop talking about regret."

Lucian looked toward her.

Thea continued,

"Let’s fight together, Grandmaster."

Lucian slowly smiled.

Before the emotional moment could continue...

General Wilfred Wraithbourne cleared his throat through another channel.

"Ahem."

Everyone looked toward his screen.

Wilfred folded his arms.

"Just one thing."

Ray appeared on another monitor.

"What?"

Wilfred spoke seriously.

"When this is over..."

He looked around the virtual conference.

"No one is doing anything illegal."

Ray frowned.

"What’s that supposed to mean?"

Wilfred immediately replied,

"I’m not talking about Graveyard, Ray."

Ray stared.

"Then who?"

Miles sighed.

"Sorry to interrupt everyone."

He walked toward the central console.

"Can we repeat the status?"

The room immediately became serious.

Commander Ray spoke first.

"Graveyard operatives are ready."

The digital map changed.

London appeared.

Several positions lit up.

"They’re on standby."

Ray looked directly toward Miles.

"Your people are waiting for your orders, son."

Miles smiled.

"Thanks, Ray."

Wilfred spoke next.

"My soldiers are prepared in Citadel."

The map shifted.

Government buildings appeared.

"Every officer..."

"Politician..."

"Senior official..."

"And government employee identified as connected to the WEB..."

He paused.

"...is under surveillance."

Olivia’s expression slowly changed.

Wilfred continued,

"Military units are in position."

"Special teams are waiting."

"Nobody moves unless we give permission."

Miles nodded.

"Great."

Charles appeared on another channel.

"Boss."

Miles turned.

"Sterling Security teams are also ready."

The map highlighted Horizon Biotech locations throughout Haven.

"Teams led by Darius, Reina, and Marina are deployed near all confirmed Horizon offices."

Charles carefully avoided revealing anything about the Ancient Warrior Order.

"They’re operating under Sterling Security designation."

Miles nodded.

"Good."

Monica appeared beside Charles on another secure feed.

"The Electricity Department is ready."

"And Air Telecom."

Miles looked toward her.

"Status?"

"We can isolate targeted regions without causing a national outage."

Monica tapped something.

"Fiber lines."

"Local relay towers."

"Selected grid sectors."

"Everything is prepared."

Miles looked toward the map.

Thea stared silently at the screens.

Even she hadn’t expected this.

She had known Miles had resources.

She knew he commanded people.

But this...

Military.

Private security.

Mercenaries.

Government infrastructure.

Communications.

Officials.

Multiple cities.

Multiple organizations.

All moving together.

Olivia looked even more stunned.

She slowly looked toward Miles.

The cousin she knew...

The chairman.

The young businessman.

The sometimes annoying man who joked too much.

This was another version entirely.

Monica’s voice came through.

"Beginning communications isolation."

Everyone became silent.

She continued,

"Disabling selected towers."

"Targeted fiber lines."

"Preparing signal interference."

A countdown appeared.

"Three."

Miles watched.

"Two."

Several sections on the map changed color.

"One."

Monica pressed the command.

"Signal out."

Multiple WEB controlled facilities immediately lost external communication.

Monica continued,

"Approximately seventy percent of targeted communications are blocked."

Miles nodded.

Then looked toward Wilfred’s screen.

"General?"

Wilfred smiled faintly.

"Waiting for your orders, General."

Miles gave him an unimpressed look.

"Open the channel."

Wilfred turned toward an officer beside him.

Then nodded.

"You’re online."

Miles looked toward Charles.

"Charles."

"Online, Boss."

Miles stepped closer to the microphone.

Thousands of soldiers...

Security agents...

Special operatives...

And field teams across Haven...

Suddenly heard the same voice.

Miles took a breath.

"Hello everyone."

The channels became silent.

"This is Honorary General Miles Sterling."

Olivia looked toward him.

Thea’s expression changed slightly.

Miles continued.

"By the trust placed in us by the President of Haven..."

His voice became firm.

"...the time has come."

"We remove the threat that has grown around our citizens."

Screens showed soldiers listening inside dark vehicles.

Agents adjusting equipment.

Teams waiting near government buildings.

Sterling Security units standing near Horizon facilities.

Miles continued,

"We are clearing weeds that were allowed to grow because of greed."

"Corruption."

"And negligence."

"Some of those weeds came from outside."

"Others were planted by people born inside our own country."

His expression hardened.

"You all know what we call someone who sells the secrets of our nation."

"Who sells the safety of our citizens."

"Who sells the institutions they were trusted to protect."

Miles paused.

"Traitors."

"And when they willingly help an enemy endanger innocent people..."

His voice lowered.

"...terrorists."

The words moved through every channel.

Soldiers listened silently.

Miles continued.

"Remember the oath you took."

"Not for politicians."

"Not for companies."

"Not for money."

"For the country."

"For the people sleeping peacefully tonight because they believe someone is standing between them and danger."

He looked toward the cameras.

"Tonight..."

"We become that wall."

His voice carried farther.

"Soldiers of Haven."

"Agents of Sterling Security."

"Those fighting for their families."

"For their clans."

"For their brothers and sisters."

Miles tightened his hand around the edge of the console.

"Let’s remove the traitors from our motherland."

Several soldiers straightened.

Miles continued,

"But remember something else."

His expression softened.

"I want every one of you coming home."

"My brothers."

"My sisters."

"My comrades."

"No unnecessary risks."

"No meaningless heroics."

"Complete your mission."

"Protect the person beside you."

"And come back safely."

His voice became quieter.

"This operation may never appear in newspapers."

"There may be no medals."

"No recognition."

"No public applause."

"But..."

Miles looked directly into the camera.

"If anyone taking part tonight ever faces difficulty in life..."

"Sterling Enterprises will listen."

"And we will stand beside you."

A small smile appeared.

"That’s my promise."

He took a breath.

"Let’s go."

Across Haven...

The atmosphere changed.

Men and women who had been waiting silently now looked toward one another.

Gloves tightened.

Weapons were checked.

Doors opened.

Engines started.

Ray smiled faintly.

Lucian stared at Miles through the screen.

"This boy..."

He shook his head.

"...is something else."

Wilfred smiled.

Miles ignored them.

"Monica."

"Ready."

"Cut the power."

Monica looked toward the control panel.

"Blackout in..."

"Three."

Across multiple cities...

Lights flickered.

"Two."

Target facilities lost secondary network connections.

"One."

Darkness.

Monica spoke calmly.

"Blackout confirmed."

Miles looked toward the national map.

Then gave the order.

"Clean the spiders from Haven."

One by one...

Body camera feeds came alive.

Dozens.

Then hundreds.

The central screens divided repeatedly.

Horizon offices.

Private residences.

Government compounds.

Warehouses.

Hidden facilities.

Night vision activated.

Green images filled the war room.

Doors opened silently.

Teams moved.

No shouting.

No sirens.

No warning.

The operation began in silence.

...

A Horizon Biotech facility.

An armed guard turned toward a sound.

Before he could react...

A team surrounded him.

Weapon removed.

Hands restrained.

Next room.

Another target.

Captured.

...

Citadel.

A government official opened his bedroom door.

Special forces stood outside.

"Sir."

He froze.

"You’re coming with us."

...

A hidden office beneath a financial building.

Computers were seized.

Hard drives removed.

Encrypted phones collected.

...

Silverline.

Sterling Security agents breached through a service entrance.

Night vision goggles reflected faintly in the darkness.

An operative whispered,

"Clear."

Another door.

"Clear."

Then...

"Target located."

...

The confirmations began arriving.

One after another.

"Team Alpha has accomplished the mission."

"Target captured."

"No casualties."

Miles listened.

Another channel.

"Team Charlie reporting."

"Mission complete."

"No casualties."

Then another.

"Horizon Biotech Base in Silverline is under control."

Another.

"Citadel base secured."

A soldier lifted the Haven flag inside a captured facility.

"Citadel base has our flag."

Miles smiled.

Not widely.

But proudly.

Every successful message mattered.

Every message ending with no casualties mattered more.

Wilfred suddenly spoke.

"President’s residence secured."

Miles turned.

"Threats?"

"Eliminated."

Wilfred continued,

"All compromised security personnel have been removed."

Miles nodded.

"Good."

He looked toward Charles.

"Get the President on the line."

Olivia immediately turned.

"The President?"

Clarissa leaned back.

"That old man."

Olivia slowly looked toward her.

"The old man?"

Thea laughed quietly.

"You really don’t hold back, Miss Clarissa."

Clarissa sighed.

"I forgot you’re all normal people."

Olivia stared at her.

Before anyone could continue...

The main screen changed.

President Maxwell appeared.

His expression was furious.

And confused.

"What is going on?"

He looked somewhere off screen.

Then back.

"Why are special forces inside my residence?"

His eyes narrowed.

"Wilfred?"

Then he noticed Miles.

"Miles?"

Another screen showed Ray.

"Even Ray?"

Miles smiled.

"Mr. President."

Maxwell stared at him.

"What?"

Miles looked completely serious.

"Lately..."

"We opened a joint business."

Maxwell’s expression became blank.

"What business?"

Miles answered calmly.

"Trash trucks."

Silence.

Maxwell stared.

Miles continued,

"We’re collecting trash all across Haven."

He smiled.

"So tomorrow morning..."

"The system doesn’t stink."

Maxwell froze.

Then his eyes widened.

"Wait."

He leaned closer.

"You mean..."

His expression changed.

"You’re doing this across the country?"

Miles looked toward Charles.

"Charles."

"Boss?"

"Open the feeds for Mr. President."

Charles pressed several commands.

"Done."

Maxwell’s screen filled with live operations.

Government buildings.

Arrests.

Horizon facilities.

Military units.

Special teams.

Captured officials.

Evidence rooms.

Then one feed appeared.

Maxwell’s face changed instantly.

"What the hell?"

He leaned closer.

"Is that the Agency headquarters?"

Wilfred answered calmly.

"You’re right, Mr. President."

Maxwell slowly looked toward him.

Wilfred continued,

"We’re removing compromised personnel."

"Traitors."

"Foreign assets."

"WEB contacts."

"Anyone we already had evidence against."

Maxwell was speechless.

Wilfred continued,

"We’ve also prepared a high security detention facility outside Citadel."

He smiled faintly.

"How about we visit tomorrow morning?"

"We can see the prisoners personally."

Maxwell stared at the screen.

Then looked toward Miles.

"Do you even understand what you’re doing?"

Miles remained quiet.

Maxwell continued,

"The consequences."

"The laws."

"The opposition."

"The Human Rights Commission."

"The courts."

His voice rose.

"If this leaks..."

"This becomes national news tomorrow morning."

Miles looked directly at him.

"Mr. President."

Maxwell stopped.

Miles’ expression became serious.

"They’re buying your ministers."

Silence.

"They’re buying officers."

"Agency personnel."

"Regulators."

"Political advisers."

Miles continued.

"Maybe next time..."

"You won’t be President."

Maxwell’s jaw tightened.

Miles continued,

"They’ll enter the system slowly."

"Quietly."

"One person at a time."

"Then they’ll exploit it."

"Decisions won’t belong to Haven anymore."

"People will eventually notice."

"They’ll stop trusting the government."

"They’ll stop trusting institutions."

"And once that trust disappears..."

Miles paused.

"...you know what comes next."

"Riots."

"Chaos."

"Fear."

The President remained silent.

Miles continued,

"The peace our soldiers protected for decades..."

"My comrades..."

"My seniors..."

"Your people..."

"All those who sacrificed themselves..."

His voice became heavier.

"That peace disappears."

Then Miles looked directly toward Maxwell.

"Your brother."

Maxwell froze.

Wilfred’s expression changed slightly.

Miles continued,

"He was one of the bravest soldiers this nation ever had."

Maxwell clenched his fists.

"He sacrificed himself protecting you."

Silence filled every connected channel.

Miles spoke calmly.

"Isn’t that one of the reasons you’re sitting in that chair today?"

"To preserve the peace, people like him died protecting?"

Maxwell didn’t respond.

Miles continued,

"The people of Haven trust you."

"They follow the laws because they believe the system is theirs."

"They believe the decisions being made belong to their country."

Miles took a breath.

"So..."

"If you want us to stop..."

He looked toward the President.

"Say it."

The war room became completely silent.

Olivia stared at the screen.

Thea remained still.

Clarissa smiled faintly.

Wilfred watched Maxwell closely.

Several seconds passed.

President Maxwell lowered his head.

His fists tightened.

Then he looked up.

His eyes had changed.

"Don’t leave any of the bastards."

The room became still.

Maxwell continued,

"That’s an order, General."

Miles smiled.

"Copy that, Mr. President."

Maxwell leaned back.

Then sighed.

"Thanks for the help."

Miles nodded.

"It’s my honor."

Maxwell turned toward another screen.

"Wilfred."

"Mr. President."

"We’re visiting that prison in the morning."

Wilfred nodded.

"Understood."

Maxwell continued,

"This is a national security matter."

"Keep it confidential."

"No media."

"No leaks."

"No politicians discussing it before clearance."

He looked toward his staff somewhere outside the screen.

"Call an emergency meeting."

"Defense."

"International Relations."

"The Agency."

"Internal Security."

He looked back toward Wilfred.

"We’re going to remind them who runs this country."

Wilfred smiled.

"Understood."

Maxwell looked toward Miles again.

"Miles."

"Yes?"

The President stared at him for a moment.

"I know I asked you to get involved."

Miles waited.

Maxwell sighed.

"But I seriously hope you retire soon."

Miles raised an eyebrow.

The President continued,

"You’re more dangerous than the WEB."

Clarissa covered her smile.

Olivia looked toward Miles.

Maxwell shook his head.

"But..."

"Keep up the good work."

He looked toward the feeds.

"My thanks to you."

"And everyone working with you."

Miles nodded.

"We appreciate your words."

Maxwell then looked toward Ray.

"Commander Ray."

Ray gave a respectful nod.

"You have my thanks too."

Ray smiled faintly.

"As always, Mr. President."

Then Charles spoke suddenly.

"Boss."

Miles turned.

"Report."

Charles looked toward another screen.

"All identified spiders inside Haven have been cleared."

Miles’ expression relaxed slightly.

President Maxwell heard him.

He looked toward Charles.

"Major."

Charles straightened.

"Mr. President."

Maxwell smiled.

"Keep up the good work."

Then he looked amused.

"I must say..."

"You ended up in the right hands after retiring from the Army."

Charles smiled.

"Once a soldier..."

He straightened.

"...always a soldier."

Maxwell nodded.

"Thank you for your service."

Then his eyes moved again.

"Miss Clarissa."

Clarissa immediately made a face.

Maxwell smiled.

"I should thank you too."

Clarissa crossed her arms.

"I’m only helping Miles."

"Of course you are."

Maxwell looked almost entertained now.

Clarissa sighed.

The President finally leaned back.

"Call it a day."

Miles nodded.

"Copy that, Mr. President."

The screen went dark.

The moment Maxwell disconnected...

Wilfred burst out,

"That was fast."

Miles looked toward him.

"What?"

Wilfred pointed through the camera.

"You boy."

Miles blinked innocently.

"Yes?"

"How dare you play an emotional game with the President?"

Miles looked offended.

"What are you talking about?"

Wilfred stared at him.

Miles continued,

"I only reminded him of important historical facts."

Wilfred sighed deeply.

Ray started laughing.

Even Lucian smiled.

Miles ignored them.

He walked closer to the microphone again.

Then pressed another channel.

A different network opened.

London.

Graveyard.

Operators waiting.

Mercenaries standing by.

People who had fought beside Ghost.

People who knew the voice before he even introduced himself.

Miles’ expression slowly changed.

The businessman disappeared.

The Honorary General disappeared.

The family man remained somewhere behind his eyes.

But another identity stepped forward.

Miles leaned toward the microphone.

"Hello..."

Several Graveyard operatives immediately straightened.

Miles smiled.

"...members of my family."

Ray looked toward him.

Miles continued,

"This is your comrade..."

A pause.

"Ghost."

Across the room...

Clarissa smiled.

Lucian’s eyes sharpened.

Wilfred folded his arms.

Thea stared toward Miles.

Miles looked at the map of London.

Then spoke calmly.

"Now...When there eyes will be on Haven"

His smile became dangerous.

"We destroy their London headquarters at night."

A silence passed across the war room.

Then...

One by one...

Everyone smiled.

Clarissa sighed "Here we go again."

The real strike against the WEB was only beginning.
