Chapter 322: How much pain can a woman endure
There was so much a woman could endure. Richard stood in a corner, stunned at Caroline’s actions. "Don’t come close to my children, you cursed witch," Caroline accused her. All eyes were on her, the feeling was still engraved into her soul.
Caroline accused Camilla of being a witch; that was why she was so beautiful and famed to be the prettiest of them all, but yet she could not carry a child. Her womb was empty, and she was like a man pretending to be a woman.
Only a witch would trade fertility for beauty, but what was the need for beauty if she couldn’t have children? Caroline claimed the reason Camilla was nice was because she wanted to kill her children.
As crazy as it sounded, Camilla genuinely loved the boys. She witnessed their first breath, first cry, first crawl, first walk, and first word. They even called her "Mama." She might be barren, but she was content with the boys her husband had with an affair; she loved them because they made her feel what she might never feel, and she was content with it.
But except for Richard, who understood her true intentions, everyone saw her in a different light, like Caroline. That was when she realized the rumours and everything. She broke down and ran out.
Richard wasn’t so heartless; Caroline was stunned when he ran after his barren wife to comfort her. She fought against him, pouring out her heart. She was hurt, and he felt guilty. He confessed that Caroline was a one-night mistake when he was drunk and mad.
The night it was confirmed she could never have a child, but that one-time mistake made Caroline pregnant. He was ashamed of himself but couldn’t rebuke the baby. He hid it away because he was too embarrassed to show up before her, but when Caroline became heavily pregnant, his family pushed him to bring her into their home and take responsibility.
Despite his explanation, she was still mad. She slapped him, and Caroline witnessed this, which she told Richard’s family. From that day on, the entire family and Caroline made Camilla’s life unbearable.
Richard’s little assurance was not enough, and Caroline made sure she could never get close to the boys. The little anchor she had broke, and she lost it. The humiliation got worse each day; before long, she was known as a witch throughout the entire town, and her relationship with Richard worsened.
Then one night, under the rain, the boys caught a nasty fever. The entire mansion was in panic, and Caroline accused her of wanting her children’s life. It was too much; Richard apologized, but she couldn’t take it.
The slap stung, her heart crumbled, while Richard was busy trying to save the boys, Camilla packed a small suitcase and a few coins and ran away. No one noticed the barren wife, and she disappeared into the rain, roaming endlessly with no idea where to go that night.
