Chapter 212: Still lies
They were close, very close she could feel the heat leaving his skin. She was in her nightmare. A very light cotton dress that didn’t seem like enough barricade between them.
"Pardon me, I think I missed something." She said, still unable to believe Cedric Von Drakkar apologized to her of his own free will.
Cedric’s hold around her waist relaxed a bit. It was harder saying it the second time. He didn’t know the last time he apologized to someone. He had a faint memory of the day he begged Eleanor to stop the servants from whipping the day she tried to scar his face because of Astrid.
He had begged in the distant past to survive but his cries were never heard. The word sorry was something truly foreign to him. "I am sorry for not being able to protect you as your husband. I failed in my duty to you." He replied
Abrielle was left speechless, it was harder to believe than the first time. He was truly apologizing to her. But why? His ego could never let him do that.
"It is fine, I was the one who put myself in that situation." She tried to push the matter aside, finding it weird.
"No, it wasn’t. I failed, and you ended up getting hurt. I heard you were weighed down after hearing the news of the damage done and it did put me into a lot of thoughts. You don’t have to feel pressured by it, I will try to understand and be patient." He wasn’t good with words, he hoped she understood what he meant.
"Cedric, it’s enough," she tried to stop him. She didn’t want to listen. She didn’t want to see or imagine this part of him that seemed like he cared. Her eyes stung, his embrace didn’t seem as terrifying as it was earlier. It gave her a faint warmth she didn’t want to receive from him, although a part of her secretly craved this warmth.
She needed this because she was falling apart. She needed someone to hold her together, but unfortunately, that person couldn’t be the one pulling her apart.
"It isn’t, I am sorry the letters didn’t get to you. He said you were looking forward to the letter, but it never came. I wrote to you twice but never got a reply and didn’t understand why. It made me upset." Cedric stopped for a while. The room fell silent once again. Time ticked by for a few seconds.
"You don’t have to find anything sought of comfort in him. I don’t care about the rumours but I do care about you." Her hand clutched her dress, finding everything he said hard to believe.
There was no reason for Cedric to lie, he wrote to her. He was too proud of that, but it seemed too good to be true. "Who else did you write to?" She asked.
