Chapter 3: System Backstory
When he woke up again, Walker was so scared that his face turned pale.
The Mountain Temple collapsed and disappeared, with broken tiles and bricks scattered across the ground. Even the altar lay in pieces, and the statue on the table was gone.
The slightest movement caused pain in his body, as if all his bones had been broken and then reassembled, leaving him with an unnatural and strange sensation.
"What's that smell?"
He reached out and touched it, finding a layer of dark, sticky substance on his face. Upon closer inspection, he saw that his entire body was covered with the same substance. The sticky material emitted a strange odor that was extremely disgusting.
Walker struggled to sit up, and when he looked around, he saw that it was already dark.
He had clearly been lying in the Mountain Temple, so why had he not been hurt at all when the temple collapsed? And why did he faint when he touched the statue? What was this sticky black substance on his body?
The sky was covered with dark clouds and there was no moonlight. The wind in the mountains howled like a ghost in the dead of night. A gust of cool air made Walker shiver.
He quickly ran out of the Mountain Temple. The fear of the unknown numbed his heart. He turned around swiftly and knelt down, worshiping the Mountain Temple while muttering to himself:
"Godfather, I know you have shown your spirit, but if you want to hurt someone, just do it. I am your godson and one of your own, so please don't scare me."
No one knew when this temple had been built or to whom it was dedicated. It had never received many incense burners and had long been abandoned. People in the nearby villages said that this place was not efficacious and was spooky, though no one could say exactly what was eerie about it.
