The Veil of Darkness

Chapter 278: Freeing The Divine Guardian Beasts (Part Two)

’Stars, Princess Annalise. How come you keep forgetting that the two of us are two sides of the same coin? There’s no barrier between us; nothing can separate us, and no matter which part of the universe, I can always find you.’ Came Esme’s response which didn’t make Annalise feel any better.

By now, she had started believing that despite the mystery Esmeray carried around him, his words were nothing but the truth. What she wanted to find out was exactly how she was related to him, and that was a question the man had refused to answer directly. According to him, she was supposed to find the answer on her own.

’Whatever!’

She just gave him the first response that came into her mind and decided to focus her attention on the witches, but the man didn’t remain silent and spoke again - ’So... how about giving it a try?’

’What?’ She asked as she tried to keep her attention properly divided between the witches and Esmeray as the latter had refused to leave her alone.

’About trying to look past their spell and see exactly how it’s working.’ Esme responded to her question.

Annalise thought about exactly what he was implying for a minute or two before she finally asked - ’That’s impossible, right? How can we look past a spell when we are not the caster?’ She was genuinely curious while a part of her somehow already knew the answer.

In response to her question, the first thing that Esmeray did was chuckle as if he was humored by her doubt, but then he gave her the answer that she really needed - ’Indeed, only a caster can see how their spell works past the time and dimensions, but you forget that all magic and spells are made of light and darkness, and there’s nothing hidden from them.’

There was so much that his simple words implied, a way deeper meaning than what Annalise was ready to accept. Everything around her simple life had been suddenly falling apart and turning out to be a lie that she was afraid of exploring any new secret of hers.

After her constant encounters with Esmeray, she was more or less catching on to exactly what he meant by his words that kept pointing toward her origin.

’What should I do?’ She asked after finally coming to terms with his idea, or more like a suggestion.
