The Veil of Darkness

Chapter 150: Crown Princess of Sky Castle

Annalise opened the folded parchment to see exactly what was inside it only to find a single word written on it.

STOP!

She showed the parchment to others who were curiously waiting to know what sort of thing was hidden in the parchment. Everyone seemed just as surprised after seeing the message as Annalise was, confusion was clearly written on all their faces, except for Valerius.

"Really? Is this really the reason why you stopped the investigation?" Ezra was the first one to ask the question and from his tone, it was pretty clear that he didn’t believe the King at all.

On the other hand, even though Annalise too didn’t understand how come the single word on the parchment made the King stop his investigation, she could tell that there was more to the story.

"The investigation team that found the pendant was massacred two nights later, not even a single person was left alive." The Crown Prince let his words sink into the minds of everyone present there before he continued.

"We assigned two more groups to work alongside, one to continue the investigation of the Portal Hall incident and the other one to investigate the massacre. However, both those teams were also killed within a day."

The hall was filled with deep silence as no one dared to say anything while the Crown Prince told the dark reality of exactly what happened during the investigation time couple of years ago.

"Late night on the day of the murders of the other two investigation groups, a raven delivered this latter to my bed-chamber and died right after it dropped the latter on my lap. As soon as it died, its dark energy attacked me and left me in a coma for days." The Crown Prince continued the story about the real reason why they stopped the investigation.

"Thankfully, it was only a warning and I recovered after a couple of days but these incidents were enough to make us realize that we stand no chance against our enemy. At the end of the day, we were still mortals who never had been able to stand against the rest of the world."

Annalise could sense the sourness in his words but somehow, she knew that it wasn’t directed at those who had powers but instead, it was directed toward his own fate that had left him magicless... and also powerless against their immortal enemies.

"Mortals aren’t powerless..." Annalise suddenly found herself speaking and as soon as her brain registered the words, she knew that she was doing the right thing. "... not having magical powers doesn’t mean that you are weak. If that has been the case, the Mortal Realm wouldn’t have survived till now against the dark forces that are trying to ruin our world."
