The Veil of Darkness

Chapter 104: Like a rabbit

Annalise almost ended up smiling as she found his way of motivating her a little bit funny even if he was speaking from the bottom of his heart. She slowly nodded her head before whispering, "Thank you."

The man surprised her once again as he cupped her face with one of his hands and captured her lips in a sweet and deep kiss that left her breathless. She heard Kenric complaining from distance but her mind was too focused on Valerius to pay attention to others.

When he finally ended the kiss and pulled his face away, she immediately turned her face away to avoid getting kissed in the middle of the road once again just in case he was not satisfied with just one kiss.

Valerius chuckled as he once again took hold of the reins as he spoke, "Let’s head to the Governor’s place. I heard visitors aren’t allowed there after sunset, so we need to hurry."

"Who do you think is at fault for getting us late in the first place?" Kenric questioned as he glared at Valerius with an unhappy look as he brought his horse next to theirs. His gaze then landed on Annalise and his face immediately brightened like a sunny day. "I told you to travel with me. Look where you end up getting stuck." He didn’t hold back from taunting her even though his frustration was actually directed at Valerius.

Valerius didn’t find it necessary to respond to Kenric as he made the horse move forward in the direction of the City Governor’s residence. It took them around ten minutes before they were standing outside the huge entrance of the big manor where the city head of Millerville was living.

The three lords jumped down from their horses at the same time before Valerius helped Annalise in climbing down. He just simply picked her up from tge horse and put her down on the ground like she weighed nothing.

Annalise quickly straightened her dress and hair as she felt her heart starting to race all over again. The jade pendant hanging from her waist suddenly started feeling heavier as she was definitely not prepared to act all mighty in front of the City Governor. However, one look in her husbands’ direction and she knew there was no going back for her unless she finishes the task.

Besides, she was the one who wanted to report the issue of the abandoned Portal Hall to the King, and now His Majesty had assigned her to continue with the investigation. She not only needed to solve the issue but she also had to provide a proper answer to the King. Talk about calling for trouble on her own!

She felt someone pulling on her wrist and when she looked up, she found all her husbands surrounding her but it was Kenric who had taken hold of her wrist. "Don’t worry, Little Bird. All three of us will be there with you, right beside you. Just make sure to not let the City Governor feel like he can fool you. Don’t give him any chance to look down upon you. Since His Majesty has decided to trust you about this issue, you need to have that same faith in yourself."
