The Veil of Darkness

Chapter 84: The Darkness of Midnight Realm

Annalise pressed her ear against the carriage window to hear what was going on outside, however, the only thing she found was the ire silence.

"My Lord..." She tried to call Lord Damien but got no response. Feeling her heart sinking lower with every passing second of silence, she tried to open the window but it seemed like Damien had locked it with a spell.

She knocked on the window as she called him again. "My lord, are you out there?" Still, she got no response. As her anxiety level rose, she once again tried to open the window before moving toward the carriage door, only to find it locked too.

"What did he mean by this? Is this a trick to abandon me here all alone?" A heavy feeling settled in her heart as soon as the second thought made its way out of her mouth.

A voice inside her head tried to convince her that Lord Damien won’t do such a thing to her only because he disliked her, but the bigger and sensible part of her mind was focused on the dislike part. He did dislike her, what if it was really his plan? Or why would he lock her inside the carriage and then disappeared?

She turned her attention to the moon thread wrapped around her wrist and as she focused on the connections between her and the other two lords, she found a weird sort of disturbance coming through the connection.

She tried to delve deeper, to find out exactly what was going on, and only after several attempts certain long moments did she finally get a clearer reading. Both the lords were quite far away from her current location but both were together. Besides, it seemed like they were using their powers hence the disturbance in the connections.

Her eyes flew open and she was met with complete darkness, as night had almost descended and the carriage was completely locked, blocking any sort of outside light from entering inside. She once again knocked against the carriage wall, making another futile attempt to call for Lord Damien but of course, she got no response.

The only possible option she could think of was to sit inside the carriage and wait, either for Lord Damien to take off the spell or for the other two lords to return. However, someone like her would never be able to sit patiently while she knew that something was really wrong outside.

She recalled the loud sound she heard before Lord Damien locked her inside. And while she couldn’t tell who or what made that sound, the one thing she could tell was that it belonged to someone or something scary. It somehow reminded her of those beasts that she encountered in the dark forest.
