The Veil of Darkness

Chapter 42: The Daughter of the Light

When Annalise woke up the next morning, she found the other side of the bed empty as Kenric had already left. She looked outside the window and noticed the clear sky and the cool breeze that was being accompanied by the soft morning sunlight.

The view outside was completely opposite to the dark stormy night that had just passed. Though she didn’t ask any of the Lords to confirm it, she was still pretty sure that the weather of the previous night had something to do with one of her husbands - most likely Damien.

As her eyes wandered around her bedroom, she noticed how lively and cozy it had become in the past half month compared to when she first came to live here. Her gaze traveled further over the bookshelf, the cabinets, and vases, and then finally over the vines that were covering a major portion of the room and that’s when her eyes caught sight of something.

She climbed out of her bed and moved closer to the side wall with the open window to take a closer look at the vines and realized that what she just saw wasn’t just an illusion but there were indeed small flowers blooming on the vines.

Very small in size, with soft white petals and crimson red centers, they appeared nothing like any other flowers she had ever seen before in her life.

She brushed the tip of her index finger against one of the petals of a flower and felt an exchange of energy as a soft sizzling sensation worked up through her finger. She brushed her finger again over the flower to confirm the energy exchange and felt the same sensation all over again.

The tip of her index finger had turned sparkly bright red after touching the white petals of the flower - another sign that the flowers weren’t normal at all, or at least, not as normal as a flower should be.

"What secrets are you hiding?" She asked the flower as she gave its petals a last stroke with her finger before pulling away.

For the next couple of minutes, she searched through the room, looking for more flowers as far as the vines were spread, and she ended up counting over two dozen of the little beauties that had graced her bed-chamber with their arrival.
