Ascension of the Eternal Game

Chapter 50: The Heart of the Gate

The Whispering Woods stretched endlessly before them, their silence heavier than the clamor of battle. Lyra Vex pressed forward, her boots squelching in the soft, mossy earth, each step a quiet promise to keep going. The air hung thick with the scent of damp leaves and a faint, electric tang of mana that prickled her skin. In Mikey's small, trembling hands, the Gatekeeper's Key pulsed with a soft, silvery light, its glow cutting through the gloom like a beacon.

Thorne matched her stride, his warhammer slung over his broad shoulder, his gray eyes flicking to every rustle in the undergrowth. Kael followed a pace behind, his staff tapping the ground as he muttered under his breath, deciphering the unseen. Elara's auburn hair gleamed faintly in the filtered light, her staff humming with the faint shimmer of a ward that cloaked them in fragile safety. Mikey stuck close to Lyra, his young face tight with resolve, though his grip on the key betrayed a flicker of fear.

They'd been trudging through the woods since dawn, the trees growing denser, their twisted branches knitting a canopy that swallowed the sky. Hours bled into one another until Kael froze mid-step, his sharp voice slicing through the quiet. "Hold up. Something's off."

Lyra turned, her hand resting on her sword. "What is it?"

Kael crouched, sweeping aside a tangle of leaves to reveal glowing runes carved into a slab of stone. "These aren't the outpost runes. They're older. More intricate."

Elara joined him, her staff casting a warm light over the symbols. "It's a warning," she said, her voice soft but edged with unease. " 'Beware the gate's heart, for it tests the soul.' "

Thorne's grip tightened on his hammer. "Another damn trial?"

Lyra's gut churned. They'd faced too many already—each one a grindstone sharpening their resolve or breaking it. But retreat wasn't an option. "We push on," she said, forcing steadiness into her words. "The sanctuary's near. I can feel it."

Mikey nodded, his knuckles white around the key. "For Alex. We can't stop now."
