Ascension of the Eternal Game

Chapter 47: The Battle for the Gate

The wave of darkness surged toward them like a living thing, a roaring tide of shadow that swallowed the light of the Whispering Woods and drowned the air in a cold, suffocating grip. Lyra Vex's breath caught in her throat, her sword trembling in her hand as the sheer weight of it bore down. She'd faced monsters before—bandits, beasts, even the twisted nightmares of the Trials—but this was different. This was raw, unbridled malice, and it wanted them dead.

"Elara!" she shouted, her voice sharp against the howling wind.

Elara Moonwhisper didn't hesitate. Her staff was already aloft, its sapphire tip flaring with a desperate, blue light. "Barrier!" she cried, driving the staff into the earth. A dome of shimmering mana erupted around them, crackling like a storm as the darkness slammed into it with the force of a battering ram. The ground shuddered beneath their feet, and Elara staggered, her knees buckling under the strain.

"It's too strong," she gasped, her silver hair plastered to her sweat-drenched face. "I can't hold it long."

Thorne didn't wait for permission. "Then we hit it first!" he roared, hefting his warhammer and charging through the barrier's edge. The massive weapon swung in a brutal arc, smashing into the shadowy tendrils that lashed out from the gate. They dissolved into wisps of smoke, but more took their place, coalescing into clawed, eyeless creatures that shrieked as they lunged.

Lyra was right behind him, her blade slicing through the first beast that came for her. It crumbled into ash, but the next was already on her, its claws raking the air inches from her face. She ducked, pivoted, and drove her sword upward, feeling the resistance as it bit into whatever passed for flesh in these things.

"There's too many!" Kael's voice cut through the chaos. He darted to the side, his twin daggers flashing as he weaved between the shadows, striking at their flanks. A claw swiped at him, and he rolled under it, popping up to bury a blade in the creature's back. It screeched, dissolving, but he was already panting, his dark eyes wide with strain.

Mikey fumbled with his satchel, his small hands shaking as he pulled out a vial of amber liquid. "Stay back!" he yelled, hurling it into a cluster of shadows. The glass shattered, and a plume of alchemical fire erupted, engulfing the creatures in a blaze of orange and gold. Their shrieks pierced the air as they writhed, burning away to nothing.

But the Shadowveil itself loomed above it all, a towering mass of darkness swirling around the Eternal Gate. Its laughter grated against Lyra's ears, sharp and jagged like breaking glass. "Fools," it hissed, its voice echoing from everywhere and nowhere. "You cannot stop what has already begun."
