Ascension of the Eternal Game

Chapter 31: Into the Whispering Woods

The storm had passed, leaving the Aether Peaks cloaked in an eerie stillness. The Eternal Gate loomed before them, its towering arch now silent, the runes etched into its stone dark and lifeless—a stark contrast to the blinding light that had swallowed Alex Kain moments ago. Lyra Vex stood motionless, her bow dangling from her hand, her fingers numb against the polished wood. Her chest felt hollow, as though a piece of her had been carved out and left behind in that gate. Alex had been her anchor—his quiet strength a steady counterpoint to her wildfire spirit—and now he was gone, leaving a void she couldn't yet name.

"He's not gone," Mikey said, his voice cutting through the silence. It trembled with youth but burned with a fierce resolve that made Lyra turn to him. His dark eyes, so like Alex's, shimmered with unshed tears. "We heard him. He's still in there."

Lyra swallowed hard, forcing strength into her words. "I know," she said, meeting his gaze. "We'll find a way to bring him back." She had to believe it—for Mikey, for herself, for all of them.

Elara Moonwhisper stepped forward, her silver hair catching the faint light filtering through the dissipating clouds. "The gate is sealed," she said, her voice calm but laced with urgency, "but its magic is complex, ancient. There may be a way to reverse the binding."

Thorne leaned on his warhammer, the weapon's head sinking into the soft earth. He grunted, his broad shoulders sagging slightly under the weight of exhaustion. "Then we start looking. No time to waste."

Kael Stoneforge flashed a grin that didn't reach his eyes, his rogue's charm a thin veneer over the strain they all felt. "I've always wanted to crack open an ancient mystery. Let's make it a good one."

Lyra nodded, gratitude flickering in her chest. They were battered, bruised, but unbroken. "Elara," she said, slinging her bow over her shoulder, "you mentioned the Gatekeepers before. Are there any left who might help us?"

Elara's brow furrowed, her fingers tightening around her staff. "The order was disbanded centuries ago, scattered after the Great Rift. But there are rumors—whispers of a hidden sanctuary in the Whispering Woods. If we can find it, there might be knowledge there to aid us."

"Then that's where we go," Lyra said, her voice firm despite the ache in her heart. "For Alex."

A shadow flickered at the edge of the clearing, and Lyra's hand snapped to her dagger. But it was only a raven, its feathers black as midnight, its eyes glinting with an unnatural intelligence. It cawed once, sharp and piercing, then took flight, vanishing into the mist.

Kael frowned, his daggers half-drawn. "That didn't feel like just a bird."
