Ascension of the Eternal Game

Chapter 19: Shattered Chains

The sanctum pulsed with a malevolent energy, the air thick with the stench of ozone and decay. Shadows writhed along the stone walls, twisting like living things, and at the heart of the chamber, the crystal hovered, its sickly light bathing the room in an unnatural glow. Mikey stood chained in shadow beside it, his eyes flickering between the familiar warmth Alex knew and the cold, red gleam of Vira's control. Vira Thorn herself loomed on the platform, her dark robes swirling like smoke, a cruel smile playing on her lips.

"You're too late," she sneered, her voice echoing with an eerie resonance. "The merging has begun. Eryndor and Earth will be one, and I will rule both."

Alex's heart hammered in his chest, but he forced his fear down, gripping his sword tighter. "We'll stop you, Vira. And we'll save Mikey."

Lyra stepped forward, her sword gleaming in the dim light. "You're not invincible."

Kael twirled his daggers, his grin sharp as a blade. "Let's see how you handle a real fight."

Elara raised her staff, its tip glowing with radiant energy. "Your reign ends here."

Vira's laugh was cold, cutting through the tension like a knife. "Fools. You think you can challenge me?" She raised her hand, and the shadows surged, forming into monstrous shapes that lunged at the group.

The battle erupted in a blur of steel and magic. Alex swung his sword, unleashing a Radiant Flame Burst that tore through the nearest shadow creature, its form disintegrating into ash. Lyra danced through the fray, her blade a silver arc that severed shadow limbs with precision. Kael darted between the beasts, his daggers finding weak points with deadly accuracy, while Elara's spells lit the chamber with bursts of purifying light, banishing the darkness wherever they struck.

But for every creature they felled, two more seemed to rise, and Vira's laughter only grew louder. "You're wasting your strength," she taunted. "The crystal's power is infinite."

Alex's gaze locked on the crystal, its glow intensifying with each passing second. He needed to destroy it, but Vira's magic shielded it, a barrier of shadow that repelled every attack. His mind raced—his Skill Synthesis was the key, but he needed something new, something that could pierce her defenses.

He glanced at Elara, her light magic flaring as she fought. If he could combine her Illumination with his Shadowbane Slash, maybe he could create a skill that could break through. Closing his eyes for a brief moment, he focused, letting the mana flow through him.
