That shut him up.

Alex remained stone-faced, giving only the faintest nod of acknowledgment.

"Good," she said, standing. "Now get out of my office. And if I catch either of you pulling something like this again, you’ll be scrubbing wyvern scales in the royal menagerie."

Without another word, they turned and exited, the door clicking softly shut behind them.

That evening, after the day’s drama had subsided and the sun had long since dipped behind the treetops, Alex lay sprawled on his bed, finally finding a moment’s peace. His room was dimly lit by the fading orange hue of the lantern on the windowsill, the light swaying with the soft breeze drifting through the open shutters.

He had just, finally, gotten Grielsa to stop fussing over him. His adoptive mother had been relentless ever since he walked through the door, her eyes scanning him for bruises, her hands hovering like a healer checking for invisible wounds. Only after repeatedly assuring her that he was fine, better than fine, had she reluctantly left him alone.

Now, alone in the soft quiet of his room, Alex rested on his back, one arm folded beneath his head as he stared at the ceiling, thoughts flickering through his mind like passing clouds. The day had been exhausting, mentally more than physically. The attack, the system evolution, confrontation with Valen, the judgmental stares from other students, Professor Sylunne’s punishment, it all churned in his head.

But just as his thoughts began to settle, a soft chime echoed in his ears, followed by the familiar glint of golden light.
