They were not only tools for flight, but also the manifestations of divine power and demonic energy, which were the very essence of angels and demons.
The density and amount of energy they possessed formed their wings, and that same energy was stored in those wings.
In other words, wings functioned much like mana halls for angels and demons, a critical organ that housed and regulated the very source of their power.
For this very reason, Lucifer had specifically targeted Michael's wings in the rebellion against the latter. In the end, he severed all of Michael's wings.
