Seeing Xiaobei emerging from inside, Mianmian found it strange. She also stepped in to check and then came back out.
"I went into the wrong box," Xiaobei casually made up an excuse.
Mianmian didn’t doubt him, took Xiaobei by the hand, turned around, but thought she saw a figure disappearing at the stairwell. She paused, let go of Xiaobei, and chased after it, only to find the staircase empty.
She wandered back distractedly, saw Xiaobei, and with a flash in her eyes, squatted down to ask, "Xiaobei, did you just see anyone?"
Xiaobei shook his head, "No."
"Really nothing?" Mianmian was skeptical.
"Really nothing," Xiaobei reiterated shaking his head again.
"Xiaobei, tell mom the truth, did you really not see anyone?" Mianmian coaxed, "Did you see a tall uncle?"
