Marvel: Empire of Power

Chapter 71: Hydra’s Ghost, a Captain’s Duty

While Elias Thorne's new Legionnaires were being blooded in the fiery crucible of the Pacific, the hunt for Johann Schmidt, or definitive proof of his demise, continued unabated in Europe. Logan, Miller, and O'Malley, a grim trio of vengeance and necessity, systematically dismantled Hydra's fractured European networks. They were no longer just striking at labs or assassinating scientists; they were actively hunting for any surviving members of Schmidt's inner circle, any high-ranking Hydra adept who might possess knowledge of the Red Skull's true fate or the location of Hydra's contingency plans.

Their latest lead, painstakingly pieced together by Anya Petrova from intercepted Enigma communications (now partially decodable thanks to codebooks captured from the U-577) and intelligence "shared" by a deeply compromised Abwehr colonel in occupied Paris (a man with expensive tastes and a desperate fear of both the Gestapo and "Mr. Blanchard's" reach), pointed to a heavily fortified chateau in the Ardennes Forest, near the Belgian border. This chateau, Schloss Adler, was rumored to be a secret meeting place for surviving Hydra leaders attempting to reconstitute their command structure, potentially under the leadership of Baron Wolfgang von Strucker. The name Strucker immediately set alarm bells ringing for Elias – the father of the Fenris Twins, a man known for his ruthlessness, his scientific acumen, and his deep ties to Hydra's occult and super-soldier programs.

[HIGH-VALUE TARGET: BARON WOLFGANG VON STRUCKER (HYDRA HIGH COMMAND – PRESUMED SUCCESSOR/REORGANIZER). LOCATION: SCHLOSS ADLER (ARDENNES). PROBABILITY OF ENCOUNTERING ADVANCED HYDRA ASSETS (INCLUDING POTENTIAL NEW UBERSOLDATEN/FENRIS TWIN SURVIVORS): EXTREME.]

This was a target Logan couldn't resist. Strucker was directly linked to the forces that had likely shaped his own forgotten, tortured past (the "Compound X" connection, though still vague, was a constant whisper in the System's periphery when Strucker's name arose).

Elias authorized the operation but knew Logan, Miller, and O'Malley, formidable as they were, might be outmatched if Strucker had truly consolidated Hydra's remaining elite. He needed an ace in the hole, or at least, a way to ensure a Hydra victory wasn't absolute. He turned to Anya and her Washington D.C. connections.

Captain America, Steve Rogers, was currently on a highly publicized USO tour across North Africa, a propaganda move by the OSS that Rogers himself found deeply frustrating. However, Anya, through her subtle influence on Peggy Carter (who was now a key liaison between the OSS and British SOE regarding "special assets"), managed to "leak" carefully selected intelligence regarding a "significant, time-sensitive Hydra leadership conclave" at Schloss Adler, implying a target of opportunity too great for conventional forces to pass up. She highlighted the chateau's remoteness, its heavy fortifications, and the presence of "experimental enemy weaponry," subtly suggesting that a small, elite strike team with... "unique capabilities" would be the ideal instrument.

The bait was taken. Colonel Chester Phillips, Rogers' gruff OSS commander, recognizing the potential coup, authorized a covert, high-risk mission for Captain America and a small, handpicked squad of Allied commandos (including some of the surviving Howling Commandos, like Dum Dum Dugan and Gabe Jones, who were now seasoned veterans of such improbable assignments). Their objective: infiltrate Schloss Adler, capture or eliminate key Hydra leadership, and secure any intelligence. They were unaware that another, even more clandestine, team was already en route.

Elias's plan was a complex, high-stakes gambit. He wanted Strucker neutralized, yes. But he also wanted to observe Captain America in action against high-tier Hydra assets, gather invaluable combat data, and potentially, if the opportunity arose during the chaos, secure any advanced Hydra technology or even Shard-bearing personnel for himself. Logan's team would be the covert spearhead, tasked with infiltration and causing initial disruption, their presence deniable. Captain America's team would be the "official" Allied assault force, drawn into the ensuing mêlée. Elias would observe it all through O'Malley's discreet burst transmitter and the System's evolving empathic links to his assets.

Schloss Adler was a gothic fortress, even more formidable than Festung Niemals, nestled deep within the dense, fog-shrouded Ardennes. Logan, Miller, and O'Malley, using infiltration routes identified by Anya's analysis of pre-war estate blueprints, slipped past the outer perimeter of SS sentries and Hydra's new, technologically advanced automated defense turrets (a chilling sign of their continued R&D despite Schmidt's absence).
