"But I saw you trying to stop yourself from laughing out loud." Vernon insisted that he saw, and he needed an explanation.
[This idiot. If it was just Dad here, I would have told him. How could I say in front of Grace and her mom that I was having fun as he was making fun of my dad? Why can’t he just stop the topic here? Idiot! Idiot!]
Vernon was speechless. He understood her concerns after listening to her inner voice, but there was something he did not understand.
(When did I make fun of Father Ford? What is she thinking about?)
He still said, "Let’s talk later about that. I am hungry. Should we eat something?"
He was clearly changing the topic.
Everyone knew what a free spirit Vernon was and did not think his behavior was weird. In fact, he was weird, but his weirdness was his normal.
"Yes, yes. Food is ready. Come, let’s eat." It wasn’t Father Ford who said that. Instead, it was Madam Hedworth.
Vernon and Helena looked at her and blinked their eyes. But they smiled like nothing was wrong and went along to wash their hands.
While washing their hands, Vernon softly whispered to Helena, "Had the Hedworths always been like that? I mean, coming here at all the occasions?"
Helena blinked her eyes. She slowly nodded, but her expression was filled with confusion.
