Chapter 25: Manly? No!
Once she had hung up on the phone, he asked her directly, "What are you searching for?"
Helena was stunned for a second. She did not expect Vernon to ask her that. She thought he wanted to distance himself from her. She had felt that from him since their wedding.
[Should I tell him? Would it impose him in any sort? I don’t want to trouble him, though.]
Vernon had already felt that Helena always tried to keep him out of ’trouble’ so that he would maintain his ’purity’ and wouldn’t be ’tainted’ by the darkness of the world.
He couldn’t understand why she would have the feeling that he is so pure and doesn’t understand the world outside.
He felt upset that his wife looked down on him even though he also knew that that wasn’t her intention.
He looked at her seriously and said, "Helena, no matter what, we are husband and wife right now. Our lives are now entangled with each other, and it will be so for a long time. If we couldn’t even share our worries with each other, then what is the reason for this relationship? You should start treating me as your confidante and not a kid who should be kept away from all your troubles. Do you understand what I am saying?"
Maybe this was the mistake he had made in his previous life? Was it because he had not seen how his wife had been treating him that they slowly turned distant, and she started to hold a grudge against him? Is that why she started to scheme against him and his entire family?
Helena didn’t know what he was thinking. She was just stunned by his sudden speech.
