Chapter 119: A Step To Know You
Lunara stood in front of her mother’s tomb. It had been a month since Lilith passed away. Her eyes lingered on the carved letters of her name, but her mind felt strangely blank.
Not much had changed since the day her mother left. She’d become someone who spoke only when necessary, retreating into a quiet world of her own.
A few steps behind her, Eryx waited in silence, never pushing, just staying close.
The wind sighed, tugging at the hem of Lunara’s coat, but still she stood, unmoving, as if time meant nothing here.
"I’ll come again, Mom," she suddenly broke the silence, her voice low. Then, without glancing back, she turned to leave.
She walked past Eryx without a word.
He didn’t call out, didn’t follow too closely. He simply waited a beat, then trailed after her with measured steps, keeping the distance she hadn’t voiced but clearly needed.
When they reached the car, he opened the door for her. Lunara paused, not looking at him, then slipped in with a quiet, "Thank you," barely above a breath.
It was the first thing she’d said to him since that morning.
Eryx closed the door gently, then circled to the driver’s side and got in. The ride back was cloaked in silence. Not cold, but perhaps careful. Two people balancing grief, guilt, and a relationship too bruised to speak freely yet.
"Do you want to get some lunch?" Eryx asked, eyes fixed on the road. Naomi had mentioned this morning that Lunara wasn’t feeling well. He didn’t want to press, but if there was even the slightest chance she was craving something like dessert, comfort or anything, he wanted to be the one to offer it.
