Chapter 9: Twisted Games
-Glyndon Walton:( song of the Chapter: Crazy In love by Beyoncé)
I woke to the shrill sound of my phone ringing. Burying my face into the pillow to block it out didn't work, so I groaned, slamming my hand on the mattress before reluctantly sitting up.
My fingers fumbled for the phone on the nightstand. "Hello," I muttered, voice thick with sleep.
"Hey, pretty girl. Why are you angry at me already?" came Alex's teasing voice, laced with amusement.
I rolled my eyes, brushing my hair away from my face. "I'm not angry. You just woke me up. What's up? Are you okay?"
Despite my annoyance, I couldn't help but smile and hug the phone closer to my ear.
"I'm fine. I just called to make sure you're awake because I know you take forever to get ready. I'll be there to pick you up in two hours for the party," he said, his voice warm.
"Okay," I replied, my tone softening. Then, casually, he added, "I love you."
The words hung in the air, as they always did. For some reason, whenever he said them, my tongue felt tied, even though I knew I loved him.
He was my boyfriend—my future husband—and he treated me well.
So, of course, I loved him. Right? Forcing myself, I said, "I love you too," and hung up.
