Evelyn’s heart sank as she saw Gracia’s face pale, her body unmoving. Panic surged through her veins, her breath hitching in fear. "Mom!" she cried, patting Gracia’s cheeks urgently, her hands trembling. "Mom, wake up!"
Her voice cracked with desperation as she shook Gracia gently, then firmly, hoping to elicit a response. The coolness of Gracia’s skin sent chills down Evelyn’s spine. Her chest heaved as dread began to settle in her stomach.
"Rita! Rita!" Evelyn shouted, her voice echoing in the room as she struggled to lift Gracia onto the bed. Tears blurred her vision, but she kept going, her resolve unshaken despite her growing fear. "Mom, please!" she whispered, her voice breaking as she sprinkled water onto Gracia’s face.
Rita burst into the room, her face etched with worry at the sight of Evelyn crouched beside Gracia, her panic palpable.
"What happened?" Rita gasped, rushing to the bed.
"She’s not waking up! Get the nurse now!" Evelyn ordered, her voice trembling yet firm. Rita didn’t waste a second, pulling out her phone to make the call.
Kiana stirred from her sleep, her small frame shifting under the covers. She rubbed her eyes groggily before turning to find Gracia beside her. Her young mind took a moment to process the scene, but when she saw Evelyn frantically trying to wake Gracia, her sleepiness evaporated.
"Grandma?" Kiana whispered, her voice trembling as she crawled closer. Her wide eyes mirrored Evelyn’s panic.
Evelyn’s tears spilled over, her voice choked as she continued to call out, "Mom, wake up! Please, Mom!"
The weight of her fear bore down on her, gripping her chest in an unrelenting hold. Memories of the past flooded her mind—the helplessness she had felt when she lost her mother before. The thought of losing her again was unbearable.
Kiana mimicked Evelyn’s actions, clutching Gracia’s hand and rubbing it gently. "Grandma, wake up. Please," she pleaded, her small voice breaking through the tension in the room.
