Leo instinctively stepped in front of Roxy, his entire posture shifting. ’’Walk away. This won’t go the way you’re thinking,’’ he warned, his voice low and dangerous.

The leader scoffed. ’’Nah, see... you embarrassed our boy back then and have continued to do so. It’s time for payback.’’

Without another word, they lunged. Leo exploded into action. His fist slammed into the closest guy’s jaw, sending him sprawling, but another grabbed his arm while a third aimed a punch at his ribs.

He twisted free, dodging the hit, and drove his knee into one of their stomachs, causing the older boy to scream out in pain. The fight was brutal, fists flying, bodies colliding. But there were too many.

Roxy screamed as he took a punch to the face, then another to his gut. Blood dripped from his lip, his breathing ragged, but Leo refused to fall. Every time they knocked him down, he got back up, shielding her with his body.

’’Stay behind me,’’ he gasped, pushing her back as he swung at another attacker.

Two of them held his arms in place as another punched him hard in the stomach. He coughed, blood dripping from his lips. A brutal hit to his face sent him sprawling again, and this time, he didn’t get up right away.

They continued to beat him until he stopped moving or fighting back, which satisfied the group of boys. ’’LEO!’’ Roxy screamed, dropping to her knees beside him while shaking his body.

Leo’s face was swollen, his lip split, and bruises already forming across his body. His fingers twitched, struggling to push himself up, but his strength was failing. Still, through his pain, he forced a weak, bloody smile.

’’You’re... safe,’’ he mumbled, barely able to get the words out.

Tears streamed down Roxy’s face as she cupped his bruised cheeks. ’’You idiot... You should’ve run...’’
