Chapter 91: Suspicious (2)
Annalise looked out the window of the carriage as it moved to escape the awkwardness that came with riding with Rafael. There was nothing to say and she didn’t want to look his way to avoid meeting his eyes. So, she kept looking out the window, taking in the sight of the town.
Annalise would always only go to the market on days she did not have to work so she was enjoying the free ride to look at more of the town. Her happiness was cut short when she remembered that Beatrice lived four houses away from Rafael.
If not for how big the homes were and the land that separated them, Annalise thought they could have walked here instead of using the carriage. Another day when the ground wasn’t so wet because of all the rain that had fallen and the sun wasn’t so hot as it tried to dry up the rain, they could walk.
’Why do they need homes this big?’ Annalise wondered. They wouldn’t need so many servants if they had a smaller home. Was this part of showing off your wealth?
Rafael folded his arms, watching Annalise stare outside in awe. Since they entered the carriage, she had not looked his way. He could have left her behind while he visited his mother, but he intended to use Annalise to make his mother not be so angry once they spoke about Delilah.
Since his mother liked Annalise, he could even leave Annalise here to keep her company in place of Delilah who should not be meeting with his mother again. Rafael was visiting to speak about what his mother’s relationship with Delilah would be like going forward and to speak about the letters her relatives kept sending. She had to be getting the same ones as him.
It was time to talk about her family being persistent that he visit them and be finally welcomed into the family.
"Oh," Annalise accidentally said out loud when the carriage stopped in front of the small home.
"Oh? Is it smaller than you expected?" Rafael asked, knowing the size of his parent’s home was the cause of her saying oh. It wouldn’t be the first time someone said it when they saw where his parents lived.
