Chapter 49: Enjoying yourself?

My feet were rooted to the spot on the stage, my body tensed with nerves. The bright lights shone down on me, blinding me momentarily, and the thumping music reverberated in my ears. I could feel every pair of eyes in the audience watching me, including Elijah’s.
Ryder stepped up beside me, placing his hand gently on my waist and pulling me closer to him. "Don’t be nervous," he whispered reassuringly. "Just follow my lead."
He began to move gracefully, swaying to the rhythm of the music. I tried my best to imitate his movements, but I felt awkward and clumsy. It was obvious that I had no idea what I was doing.
"Loosen up a bit," Ryder chuckled in my ear. "You look like a stiff board."
I playfully hit him on the shoulder with the hand that was resting there. "Shut up. I’m trying."
He laughed again. "Try harder."
Taking a deep breath, I attempted to relax and let myself go with the music. But my movements still felt rigid and unnatural, and I couldn’t shake off the feeling of being completely out of place on that stage.
I stole a glance at Elijah, my heart suddenly racing as our eyes met. His intense stare was fixed on me, his expression unreadable. Beside him was the lady he had been talking to earlier, their bodies swaying together in the dance. But his gaze never left me, and mine stayed locked onto his.
