Chapter 558 - 558: If you want to touch it, then go ahead!
Within that black mist, there were occasional drifting clusters of seven-colored clouds, making the whole sight feel extremely eerie.
Though it looked terrifying, this was something only Hikari could see through his aura-sensing technique.
Ordinary people, with the naked eye, couldn't perceive any of it. All they could see was how luxurious the Munakata residence's decor was.
Because of that, Hikari felt that Munakata Nakoto, who was just an ordinary person, was actually quite smart.
The conclusions she had drawn were, in fact, not much different from his own, even after he had obtained more information through his technique.
Although her father had stayed in the residence much longer than he had, it was still no easy feat.
Gently stroking the already yellowed cover of the diary, Hikari seemed to see a man at death's door, thin as a stick, sitting alone in a wheelchair.
With skeletal hands, he struggled to grip a fountain pen, trembling as he wrote down line after line of the information he had painstakingly gathered.
Even though he had reached the end of his life, as a father, his heart was still with his daughter.
"I will protect your daughter. I will also punish your wife. Rest in peace."
Hikari murmured softly, giving his answer to this father's final, humble plea.
After all, even without mentioning that he had already formed an alliance with Munakata Nakoto, the contents of this diary alone had already given him a lot of help.
It not only filled in gaps in the information he had gathered, such as certain secrets of the Munakata residence, and the key to the chastity lock on Nakoto, but it also let him see more clearly the venom hidden beneath Munakata Rurie's beautiful exterior.
Given his current abnormal physique, it was hard to judge what would happen to him.
But if it were an ordinary person, lured by Munakata Rurie into getting intimately involved with Nakoto, making her… become the sacrifice for the evil god's descent, then as one of the participants in the ritual, that person would very likely be cursed and influenced by the evil god, and could easily lose their life.
Thinking back to Madam Rurie's gentle attitude, her occasional hands-on "service," and even the rewards she promised afterward, it was all honey hiding poison, a needle concealed beneath sweetness.
For a vicious woman like that, who schemed against him, Hikari was determined to punish her no matter what.
At that moment, footsteps suddenly echoed from the corridor outside the study.
A figure slowly approached the study door.
Seeing that the door was open, and that someone seemed to be inside, the figure quietly poked her head in to take a look.
When she saw a person standing by the desk, illuminated by moonlight filtering through the window lattice, looking sneaky and strangely eerie, the figure, who had been walking down the corridor carrying a lantern, suddenly trembled violently.
Just then, Hikari heard the movement and turned his head.
Seeing him suddenly look back, the figure's face went pale with fright.
She instinctively opened her mouth wide, about to shout, "Who are you? Someone come—mmph!"
Before the maid Takahara Ren could cry out, Hikari rushed forward in a flash and raised his hand to firmly cover her soft lips.
"It's me, Hikari. Miss Takahara, don't shout," he reminded her softly. Only after the pale-faced Ren calmed down a little did he release his hand.
Ren quickly lifted the lantern and shone it on his face.
After seeing clearly that it was indeed him, the tension in her expression eased slightly.
Letting out a breath, she asked in confusion, "Hikari-kun, you… why are you here?"
"Someone suddenly sneaking around the house at night, I thought it was that Tani Ichiro guy who didn't look like a good person."
"I… I didn't expect it to be you."
"Oh, right! Wasn't the study locked? How did you get in?"
Listening to her string of questions and seeing her puzzled expression
Hikari stared at her harmless, innocent face for a moment, then said, "It's a long story. If you want to hear it, come inside first. I'll explain in there."
"Th-this… okay!"
Ren hesitated for a moment, but recalling how Hikari had saved her from Tani Ichiro earlier, she finally nodded and followed him into the study.
After casually closing the door, Hikari turned to her and asked, "Miss Takahara, are you willing to trust me?"
Ren's small face flushed slightly, her petite yet full chest rising and falling gently as she said, "Even though we've only just met… but I trust you!"
"Otherwise… otherwise I wouldn't have followed you in," she muttered softly.
Hikari realized that although Ren might be a year or two older than Munakata Nakoto, she was far more naive and innocent.
In the Munakata residence, an old mansion filled with gloomy air and complicated human hearts, Ren's pure and unworldly face was like a spring in the desert. Hikari couldn't help but chuckle, "Since you trust me, Miss Takahara, I'll explain things to you first."
"First, the reason I could enter the study is because Madam Rurie personally gave me this master key," As he spoke, Hikari opened his palm and showed her the key.
Before Ren could react in surprise, he continued, "And the reason I'm searching the study is because there are some unspeakable secrets involving the Munakata residence, Madam Rurie, and Miss Nakoto."
"Both of them have entrusted me to investigate this secret, and I'm personally interested as well, so that's why I came here in the middle of the night."
Hearing his explanation, Ren still looked confused, "Huh? I mean, I believe you, Hikari-kun. I also believe this master key was given to you by Madam Rurie, not stolen or anything."
"But how could there be any secrets in the Munakata residence? And how could Madam Rurie and Miss Nakoto have anything unspeakable between them?"
"They're both normal, good people."
"And what exactly are you investigating, Hikari-kun?"
Looking at her innocent and clueless expression, Hikari smiled, "You're curious about this too?"
"Alright, I can tell you."
"But what I'm about to say, don't be scared."
As soon as she heard that, Ren immediately raised her hand and patted her chest, which pressed firmly against the loose fabric of her maid outfit.
After a couple of thumps, she said confidently, "I patrol this huge, slightly eerie mansion every week at night. I'm a super professional maid. I won't be scared."
"Alright, then I'll tell you…", Hikari paused with a smile, then suddenly became serious, "This house might contain an evil god."
"Ah?"
Ren's eyes widened. Her body trembled, and her hand loosened, causing the lantern to clatter to the ground. The flickering light cast her terrified face in shifting shadows.
"Didn't you say you wouldn't be scared?", Hikari glanced at her heaving chest.
"I… I'm not scared! Just surprised, that's all!", she insisted stubbornly, picking up the lantern.
Hikari smiled and shook his head, "Alright, I'll continue."
"Actually, it's not guaranteed that there's an evil god in this house."
"But the Munakata residence has definitely been influenced by one."
"And the highest authority here right now, the head of the Munakata family, Madam Rurie, is a follower of that evil god."
Hearing this, Ren's mouth fell open in shock, "Ah?"
Her pale hand trembled again, and the lantern dropped to the ground with another clatter.
"Ma… Madam Rurie?"
"She's a follower of an evil god?"
"N-no way!"
She covered her mouth, staring at Hikari in disbelief.
"There's something even harder to believe, Miss Takahara," Hikari said slowly.
"Do you know? Not only does Madam Rurie worship the evil god, she also plans to carry out some kind of evil ritual to let it descend in this residence."
"And the most terrifying part is, she intends to sacrifice Miss Nakoto."
"She plans to have Nakoto bear a child, and then offer her as a sacrifice to the evil god, as the vessel for its descent."
As she listened, Ren's violet eyes grew wider and wider.
By the time he finished, she finally spoke in disbelief.
"Impossible! Absolutely impossible!"
"Miss Nakoto is her daughter!"
"How could Madam Rurie do something like that to her own child?"
"And even if there were a sacrifice, shouldn't it be me, an outsider, first?"
Maybe the situation had gone beyond what she could comprehend. Because at this moment, Ren actually calmed down a bit and began analyzing things rationally.
Hearing her words, Hikari smiled, "In the face of faith and power, family ties can become insignificant."
"As for why you weren't chosen, Miss Takahara…"
"I'm not sure either. Maybe there's some kind of taboo involved."
"Anyway, take a look at this notebook first."
Hikari handed her the red-brown diary.
Ren took it. The writing on the cover had yellowed, but it was still neat and forceful.
"Huh? This is… Mr. Munakata's diary?", Her brows lifted slightly.
Although she didn't remember him very clearly, there were still some places in the house where his overly neat handwriting was displayed, so she recognized it at once.
"Yes. Take a look," Hikari confirmed.
"This… this is someone else's diary. It's so private… is it really okay for me to read it?", As a maid of the Munakata family, she hesitated.
Hikari smiled, "People say diaries hide true thoughts, but how many really write honestly?"
"Most of what's written is just decoration. Where's the real truth in that?"
"Can what's written in a diary really be called what's in the heart?"
"And what if this is something even more important than privacy, something meant to be seen?"
"Alright, enough. Just read it."
"O-okay…", Though still uncertain, Ren gritted her teeth and slowly opened the first page.
As the words came into view, her eyes gradually widened, her lips trembling as she read the shocking records about Munakata Rurie worshipping an evil god and planning to harm and sacrifice Nakoto.
Her beautiful eyes grew wider and wider, her lips quivering uncontrollably.
Having lived in this house for so long, in some details of daily life, she actually understood the mother and daughter better than Hikari.
Now, as the words overlapped with her memories, she had no choice but to believe them.
After finishing the diary, she could roughly judge, none of it was fabricated… it was real.
All of it was real.
Everything Hikari had said about the evil god, about Madam Rurie wanting to sacrifice her daughter Nakoto as a vessel, it was all true.
No wonder that Tani Ichiro had seemed like a bad person at first glance, yet Rurie had still allowed him into the residence.
Thinking back to some of Madam Rurie's earlier actions that had seemed a bit strange but hadn't raised suspicion at the time, now, in hindsight, they felt chilling.
Understanding the whole situation, Ren immediately panicked.
At a loss, she clutched Hikari's arm, her voice trembling with tears.
"Miss Nakoto grew up with me. She's even always called me Ren-nee."
"Even though I'm just a servant and shouldn't overstep, I've always treated her like a little sister."
"We've always been very close. She's a really good person."
"Hikari-kun, please… please save her!"
