Chapter 405 Tabloids
Midtown School of Science and Technology was one of the top-rated high schools in New York!
The students who made it into this school were all hardworking, high-achieving little geniuses. Almost all of them would go on to higher education after graduation, and the top ten percent—the elite of the elite—could even land spots at prestigious institutions like MIT.
Inside a bright, clean classroom, an African-American female teacher stood at the podium, delivering her lecture.
The students were mostly focused, hanging on her every word—except for Jason’s two children, who seemed to be in a world of their own.
Angelina’s desk was pristine, save for a science book with a cover depicting a swirling galaxy. She rested her head on one hand, occasionally flipping a page with the other. Her brow would furrow at particularly dense passages and smooth out once she grasped the concepts. They say a man is most attractive when he’s focused on his work, but the same applies to women. Angelina’s unconscious little movements left the surrounding boys with dry throats and wandering minds; the teacher’s lecture didn’t stand a chance of sticking in their heads.
Brian was also ignoring the lesson, though his approach was much more blunt. He sat with his legs crossed, eyes glued to his phone with a smirk on his face—almost certainly texting some girl.
Despite the siblings clearly not paying attention, the teacher turned a blind eye. Part of it was the progressive teaching style, but the larger part was their background. When these two enrolled, the entire Board of Directors had come out to welcome them; it was a scene more bustling than the school’s anniversary celebration.
There was, however, a third reason: high school curriculum was simply too elementary for them.
As a sorceress, reading was Angelina’s primary hobby. During her time in Wakanda, she had spent ten years completing full curricula for three related disciplines; her theoretical knowledge already surpassed that of an average PhD holder. Though Brian was naturally restless and preferred a good scrap over a book, he had still been forced by their mother to finish a college-level education.
For the siblings, this trip to America was more about interacting with peers, integrating into modern society, and broadening their horizons. Textbooks and credits were utterly irrelevant.
...
Ring!
The bell signaled the end of class. The teacher didn’t linger, packing up her materials and bidding the students goodbye. The teenagers dropped their books and headed out in small groups toward the cafeteria for lunch.
"Brian! Where are you eating today?" A few classmates crowded around Brian’s desk.
He tucked his phone away with a smile. "Sorry, I’ve got a date today!"
"Ooh..." His friends gave him knowing looks and headed off to the cafeteria on their own.
By the time Brian left the room, Angelina had just finished the very last word of the final page of her book. She closed it, sighed softly, and stood up to head toward the school cafeteria.
Brian was a big spender who enjoyed luxury. If he didn’t have a date, he’d definitely be at a nearby Michelin-starred restaurant. Angelina, by contrast, was much more low-key. She had no real demands when it came to food; the cafeteria fare was perfectly adequate for her.
Between the academic building and the cafeteria lay a small garden. Aside from the gym, this was the most popular spot on campus. At lunchtime, many students liked to grab a sandwich and sit on the benches to enjoy a quiet meal.
As Angelina entered the garden, she spotted Brian from a distance, chatting and eating with a blonde on a bench. So that’s tonight’s prey, she thought.
She cast a glance at the girl as she walked by. Gwen Stacy had clearly put some effort into her makeup today. Her blonde hair was tied in a ponytail with neat bangs. She wore a T-shirt under a light-colored blazer, paired with ultra-short shorts and knee-high boots that left a generous amount of thigh exposed.
"Hey, Angelina! Want to join us? I made sandwiches; Brian says they’re good." Gwen called out, holding up a container.
Angelina looked over; the box was filled with homemade sandwiches.
"I’m telling the truth, they’re actually great. Have a taste," Brian added, taking a large, enthusiastic bite.
"Thanks, but I’ll leave you two to your date." Angelina gave a smile and continued her slow pace toward the cafeteria.
In private, nine out of ten things the siblings said to each other were insults, but in front of outsiders, they were perfectly in sync when it came to maintaining the image of a flawless family.
Not having much of an appetite, Angelina bought only a sandwich and a coffee. She planned to take them back to the classroom and eat while reading. But when she returned to the garden, she saw a crowd of students gathered around a table, chanting in unison: "Eat it... Eat it... Eat it..."
Eat what? Is it a competitive eating contest?
Angelina walked over with her bag and found Gwen and Brian watching the spectacle as well. Rather than shoving her way through, she tapped Brian on the shoulder. "What’s going on?"
"Look, Flash is bullying someone again." Brian shoved through the crowd to clear a path for Angelina to see.
On a round table sat a plate of food. A student named Flash was holding another student upside down, forcing him to eat the food on the plate while inverted.
More mindless school bullying... Angelina rolled her eyes and turned to leave.
Just then, a boy carrying an old-fashioned camera pushed his way into the crowd. Angelina recognized him and his camera instantly. Whenever she ate in the garden, he would be lurking in the distance, snapping secret photos of her.
Angelina didn’t want a confrontation, so she hadn’t stopped him, but the family bodyguards had investigated him to ensure he wasn’t a threat. As it turned out, he was just a normal student infatuated with her. The files showed he was an orphan, living with his aunt and uncle after his parents died.
What was his name again? Right... Peter. Peter Parker. He was in the same class as Brian’s girlfriend, Gwen Stacy.
Angelina paused, watching Peter with curiosity. What is he doing rushing in with a camera? Does he want to take a photo of the poor kid’s humiliation?
She frowned. I guess some people are pathetic for a reason.
As Peter pushed inside, Flash spotted him and yelled excitedly, "Hey, Parker! Come take a picture!"
To Angelina’s surprise, Peter looked at the scene and shook his head. "No, I’m not taking that photo. Put him down."
"Just one shot!"
Peter remained firm. "Put him down, Flash! His face is turning red!"
Flash ignored the warning, continuing to force the student to eat. The surrounding crowd cheered, seemingly enjoying the cruelty.
Seeing his words were being ignored, Peter shouted anxiously, "Put him down, Eugene!"
Flash snapped his head around.
"Oh... the meddler is about to get his ass kicked." Brian stood his ground, wearing a look that said he lived for the drama.
Angelina, however, looked at Peter with a hint of newfound respect. She had assumed he was an accomplice, but it turned out the kid had a spine after all. Unfortunately, Peter was lean and no match for the Flash.
Flash’s face went livid. He glared at Peter and unceremoniously dropped the other student on the ground.
"Hey, man..." Peter reached out to check on his classmate, but Flash shoved him aside and landed a heavy punch right in his face.
Thud! Peter was knocked flat on the ground.
"Come on, get up, Parker!" Flash roared.
Peter struggled back to his feet, only for Flash to bury a fist in his stomach. Peter collapsed, clutching his midsection in pain.
"Come on! Again!" Flash shouted, delivering a kick to Peter’s back.
Peter couldn’t get up anymore, but the violence continued. Not a single student in the crowd dared to step in.
"Aren’t you going to help?" Angelina asked her brother.
"No need. It’s just kids playing around. No training, no weapons—no real damage is being done," Brian said nonchalantly. He’d seen plenty of this in Wakanda—though usually, it was him chasing a crowd of kids until his mother gave him a beating at home.
Brian didn’t care, but Angelina had reached her limit. She sighed and stepped forward.
Flash had one foot raised, ready to stomp down on Peter. Angelina walked up and lightly hooked her foot behind his standing leg. Flash’s legs went out from under him, and he slammed into the dirt face-first.
The garden went dead silent. Every eye turned to Angelina.
Flash scrambled up, ready to pummel whoever had tripped him, but when he saw it was Angelina, the fire in his eyes died down instantly. She was the undisputed goddess of the school; almost every boy had a crush on her, and quite a few girls did too.
Flash was no exception. Lacking looks or status, he used his muscles and bullying to try and grab her attention—a middle-school tactic that never worked on her.
"Angelina, you..."
"You like fighting that much?" Angelina looked at him. "How about you go a round with me?"
"No... I don’t hit girls," Flash stammered.
"Then get the hell out of here!" Angelina snapped. "If I catch you throwing your weight around and bullying people again... I’ll suggest to the Board that you might be happier at a different school."
Everyone knew the siblings had a powerful background. Coming from her, that wasn’t an empty threat.
"Fine. I’m sorry. I’ll stop," Flash muttered, looking like a wilted plant.
"You’re saying that to the wrong person!"
Flash walked over to Peter and pulled him up. "Parker, you okay?"
Peter, clutching his stomach and nursing his bruised face, shook his head. "I’m fine."
"Sorry, man." Flash patted Peter’s shoulder and slinked away.
The show was over, and the crowd slowly dispersed. Peter stood there, wanting to leave but unable to move. He looked at Angelina, finally summoning the courage to speak. "Uh... thank you!"
"Don’t mention it." Angelina glanced at his injuries and walked past him. "Go see the school nurse. You might have a concussion."
Peter stared at her retreating figure, feeling like he’d fallen into a dream. The goddess saved me. And she was worried about me. What does it mean? Does she... like me? He stood there in the garden, staring blankly at the spot where she had disappeared.
...
The trio walked toward the academic building. Midway, Brian grabbed Gwen’s hand. "Go on ahead to class. I need a word with my sister."
"Okay!" Gwen said sweetly, heading off. As she passed Angelina, she gave a thumbs-up. "That kick was beautiful!"
Once she was out of sight, Brian dragged Angelina into an empty lab.
"What the hell was that?" Brian demanded, his voice laced with frustration.
"Are you blind?" Angelina replied, crossing her arms.
"You think you’re some hero of justice?" Brian grew even angrier. "Don’t forget whose children we are. We are never going to be the ’good guys.’ If we get exposed because of your recklessness, we’re all going back to Wakanda!"
"Maybe you’re sick of life in the States, but I’m not done having fun yet. Don’t drag me down with you. Next time something like this happens, stay out of it. Do you hear me?"
"Hah... what right do you have to lecture me?" Angelina sneered. "I taught one classmate a lesson and you act like the world is ending. What about you?"
"What about me?"
"Picking up women, throwing money around at clubs, racing sports cars through Manhattan... Do you know how many times your face has been in the tabloids?"
"If the day comes that we’re exposed and kicked out of the country, I guarantee it’ll be because of the trouble you stirred up!"
"I..." Brian was speechless.
"Move!" Angelina shoved him aside and stormed out of the lab.
