Chapter 358 Grin
Outside New York, Steve drove a stolen Ford pickup onto the highway, flooring it toward New Jersey. His destination: Camp Lehigh.
Steve remembered this place vividly. Decades ago, he was just a skinny kid from Brooklyn arriving for basic training. It was here that his journey began. But in his memory, it was just an ordinary military camp. Why would Fury's clue lead here?
By the time the clock struck midnight, Steve arrived. The camp was a ghost of its former self—abandoned, overgrown with weeds, and marked with rusting "No Trespassing" signs. Steve broke the chains with his shield and stepped inside. Walking through the training grounds, he could almost hear the ghosts of drill sergeants screaming. He saw his younger, frail self struggling at the back of the line.
He searched the grounds until he spotted a military supply warehouse that shouldn't be there. According to regulations, supply depots weren't allowed within 500 meters of the barracks.
Steve smashed the lock. As he stepped inside, rows of fluorescent lights hummed to life, revealing a SHIELD emblem painted on the far wall. This was the birthplace of SHIELD. He saw the photos of the founders: Howard Stark and the love of his life, Peggy Carter. Steve stared at her photo, a wave of regret and longing washing over him, before he forced himself to focus.
Behind a row of filing cabinets, he found a hidden elevator. When it wouldn't open, he smashed through the doors and rappelled down the shaft into a massive underground facility. At the bottom, a heavy blast door slid open to reveal a room filled with archaic 1970s server banks and a central computer terminal.
Steve plugged in the USB drive Banner had prepared.
The ancient machines whirred to life. A dark, digital face flickered onto the screen. A camera lens zoomed in on Steve, and a familiar, grating voice filled the room.
"Steve Rogers. Born 1918."
Steve frowned. "Is this a recording?"
"I am not a recording, Captain. I may not be the man you captured in 1945, but I am much more now." On the side screen, a photo of a balding, bespectacled man appeared.
Arnim Zola. The Swiss scientist who served the Red Skull.
"You should be dead," Steve said.
"I am all around you," Zola's digital voice gloated. "In 1972, I was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Science could not save my body, but my mind was worth preserving. I was uploaded into 200,000 feet of data banks. You are standing inside my brain."
Zola explained that he was recruited by SHIELD during Operation Paperclip. While the world thought HYDRA died with the Red Skull, it had actually spent seventy years growing like a parasite inside SHIELD. HYDRA had seeded chaos, sparked wars, and even influenced the early days of the Joker Organization.
"SHIELD didn't stop you?" Steve asked, horror dawning on him.
The screen flashed a headline of Howard Stark's death. Then a recent file: Nick Fury: Deceased.
"Accidents happen," Zola said. "HYDRA created a world so chaotic that humanity is finally ready to sacrifice its freedom for security. Once our algorithm is complete, a New World Order will rise. We've won, Captain. Your life is worth as much as your death: zero."
Steve smashed the main screen in a rage, but Zola's face simply hopped to a side monitor. "I abandoned my flesh long ago, Rogers. You cannot kill me."
"What's on the drive?" Steve demanded.
"Project Insight requires insight," Zola replied. "I wrote an algorithm to identify threats to HYDRA before they even happen."
"What kind of threats?"
"The answer is fascinating. Unfortunately, I cannot tell a dead man."
The blast doors slammed shut. Steve threw his shield, but it bounced off the heavy iron.
"SHIELD has launched a short-range ballistic missile at these coordinates," Zola said calmly. "I've been stalling for time."
Steve didn't wait to hear the rest. He scanned the room frantically and spotted an iron grate leading to a drainage pipe. He ripped it open and dove inside just as the missile struck.
BOOM.
The entire warehouse collapsed into the earth. Fire and a massive shockwave leveled the camp, burying everything under tons of concrete.
*
Military helicopters swarmed the site. STRIKE agents rappelled down, rifles ready. Alexander Pierce had ordered the strike the moment Zola signaled Steve's location. The agents moved cautiously; they knew that even a missile strike might not be enough to kill Steve Rogers.
Because Steve wasn't just a Super Soldier anymore.
"ROAR!"
A bestial howl erupted from the rubble. The earth shook.
"He's coming out! Brace yourselves!" The commander yelled.
A massive explosion of debris sent boulders flying like pebbles. Out of the dust leapt a monster. He was over seven feet tall, with crimson-red skin, bulging muscles, and a face twisted in primal rage. He held the vibranium shield in a massive left hand, wearing nothing but torn trousers.
During the Battle of New York, Steve had nearly died. To save him, Nick Fury had authorized the injection of a "Hulk Serum." Steve had not only survived but gained the ability to transform while retaining his own consciousness—a feat that made Bruce Banner green with envy.
"FIRE!"
Specialized high-caliber rounds rained down on the Red Beast. Steve snarled in pain. He grabbed a half-ton boulder and hurled it. It flew with the speed of a cannonball, crushing a group of agents into paste.
The STRIKE team wavered. "Gas him! Use the suppressants!"
The helicopters launched canisters of white gas—a chemical developed specifically to neutralize the Joker Organization's Hulk clones. Steve inhaled the mist, and his muscles immediately felt like lead. He stumbled, his movements slowing as the toxins began to paralyze his nervous system.
The STRIKE agents, protected by gas masks, poured lead into him. Steve dropped to one knee, panting, his head hanging low.
"Keep it up!" The commander shouted from the safety of his bird.
The agents felt a surge of triumph. The legendary Captain America was finally broken.
But they didn't understand the Hulk's power. Steve was a good man, slow to anger, which made him a weak Hulk. But being pinned down, gassed, and shot like a caged animal by the very people he had served... that sparked a fire.
His eyes glowed a brighter, fiercer red. The strength began to flood back, fueled by a pure, righteous fury.
BOOM!
Steve kicked off the ground, launching himself like a rocket. He cleared the cloud of gas in a single bound, landing heavily outside the camp. Away from the suppressants, his power surged to a new peak.
The Red Beast looked back at the helicopters, his teeth bared in a terrifying grin. The counter-attack was about to begin.
