Marvel: The Villain

Chapter 414 Sherds

Jason floated in mid-air, his expression a complex tapestry as he looked down at the breathtaking scenery and the silhouette of New York City shimmering in the distance.

Breathing in the Earth’s air for the first time in years, Jason stood in melancholy silence for a long moment before whispering, "I’m back."

It was a simple phrase, but it carried the weight of years of hardship and the dark ambition he held for the future.

After a brief moment of sentimentality, Jason turned and flew toward the Stark Base. Even before landing, he sensed a familiar ripple of energy—something was off.

He covered the dozen kilometers in a heartbeat. From a distance, he could see a group of people tied up on the ground within the base. As he drew closer, he recognized them instantly.

"Harley, Christine, John, David, Franklin..."

Seeing those familiar faces, Jason’s heart skipped a beat.

"Hey."

The group heard the voice and looked up. To a man, they turned to stone.

Looking at their stunned, vacant expressions, Jason felt a pang of guilt and heartache. It seemed their years on Earth without him hadn’t been pleasant.

Jason descended slowly, his feet touching the dirt. With a casual wave of his hand, the energy shackles binding them shattered.

"It’s been over ten years. Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten me?"

The comrades scrambled to their feet, their breathing ragged, faces flushed with disbelief.

"Jason!"

"Honey!"

Christine and Harley burst into tears simultaneously. Ignoring everyone else, they sprinted toward him and threw themselves into his arms.

Jason caught them both, pulling them into a crushing embrace, burying his face in their necks and deeply inhaling their scent.

"I’m sorry... I’m late."

"Don’t. Don’t say sorry, and don’t say a word..."

They clung to him with terrifying strength, as if afraid he might vanish if they let go for even a second. A few other comrades looked like they wanted to jump in for a hug too, but seeing the crowded space, they thought better of it.

Moments later, the two women regained some semblance of composure. They took Jason by the hands and led him toward two children.

Harley looked at her son. "Brian, weren’t you always screaming for your dad to come back? Your dream came true. Go on, give your old man a hug."

Brian looked at Jason timidly, as if trying to verify if this legendary figure was actually his father. He ignored his mother’s request; the idea of hugging his father in public felt excruciatingly awkward. He could practically feel the goosebumps rising.

Jason felt the boy’s distance, but he simply smiled. He didn’t mind. After a decade, he was little more than a stranger to the kid. Besides, the boy was in his teens—awkwardness was part of the territory.

"Brian..." Jason stepped forward and gave the boy’s chest a playful punch. "Heh, you’re handsome. Solid muscle, too. I bet you’ve got more than one girlfriend, don’t you?"

Brian’s jaw dropped. His face turned bright red as he stammered, trying to defend himself. Holy shit, does Dad have mind-reading powers? He saw through me in five seconds!

Harley swatted Jason’s shoulder. "What kind of nonsense are you teaching him?"

Jason chuckled sheepishly. "Right, I’m a dad now. Shouldn’t have said that."

On the other side, Christine pulled a girl forward, her voice thick with emotion. "This is Angelina... you’ve been gone so long, you probably don’t even recognize her."

"A little... she’s grown into quite the lady." Jason looked at Angelina with a tender smile. "But I can see myself in those eyes. She’s got the look of a queen."

"Go on, honey," Christine urged, giving her a gentle push.

"Father," Angelina whispered, her face flushing as she took small, hesitant steps.

Jason didn’t wait. He stepped forward and pulled her into a warm embrace. "It’s so good to see you, my child."

Unlike his feelings for Harley and Christine, these two "brats" tugged at his heartstrings in a way he hadn’t expected.

"Me too, Father," Angelina said, her eyes welling up as she hugged him back.

Jason’s sudden disappearance had cast a long shadow over their childhoods. Brian had blamed everything on his father, harboring a deep resentment that made him refuse to even speak Jason’s name for a time. Angelina wasn’t as hardened as her brother; her heart was softer. She didn’t blame her father; instead, she bore the pain of missing him in silence, making it her life’s goal to eventually defeat the Ancient One.

The family gathered, the air filled with laughter and warmth.

After a while, Jason walked over to greet the rest of his crew.

"John... David... Franklin... A-Train... Oh, Voldemort, first time meeting you in the flesh..."

After acknowledging everyone, Jason’s expression shifted. "Alright. I know we have a lot to talk about, but let’s handle the business at hand first."

The crew erupted in cheers.

"Yes! I’ve been waiting for this!"

"Boss, you have to tear them apart!"

"Haha! The tables have turned. Now it’s our turn to play!"

Jason drifted slowly toward the other side of the base, scrutinizing the faces of his captives.

"How nostalgic. Look at all these old friends."

"Tony... you’ve got gray hair now. The new suit looks cool, though. What Mark is it?"

"Bruce. Creative move, merging yourself with the Hulk like that."

"Steve. Captain America. I didn’t expect you to take the Hulk serum too... but why the hell are you red?"

"Thor, Loki. Long time no see. I just got back from Asgard. It’s a beautiful place—pity we didn’t cross paths there."

The heroes stared back at Jason with complex, unreadable expressions. None of them spoke.

Jason completed his circle, finally resting his gaze on Captain Marvel. "And... who are you?"

"Jason Walter. You don’t know me, but I know you," Carol said coldly. "The name is Carol Danvers—"

"Save it. I don’t give a damn what your name is," Jason interrupted, his face turning to ice.

"First: That little rock you’re clutching in your hand? That’s mine. And I’m guessing you aren’t going to hand it over nicely."

"Second: You and this pack of clowns hurt my family, my friends, and my children. You think I’m just going to let that slide?"

"Based on those two counts alone, your lives are forfeit. No one can save you now."

Carol let out a cold laugh. "I’ve heard Jason was arrogant. It’s an honor to finally see it for myself. But killing me isn’t going to be as easy as you think."

"Heh. You think having one Infinity Stone makes you my equal?" Jason looked at her with genuine pity.

The moment the words left his lips, Jason’s energy erupted.

Captain Marvel didn’t flinch. Golden energy flared from her body, blindingly bright. Their powers were remarkably similar, and their fighting styles were equally brutal: no fancy tricks, just raw, bone-crushing violence.

BOOM!

A thunderous explosion rocked the sky. The shockwave was so powerful it nearly blew the crowd on the ground off their feet.

In that single exchange, Captain Marvel realized exactly what Jason meant. Because of the nature of the Stones, they couldn’t use direct energy abilities on each other, but the difference in raw power and energy volume was staggering.

The moment they clashed, Captain Marvel was sent screaming through the air by a single punch. She hit the ground like a kinetic missile, punching clean through a distant mountain range and triggering a localized earthquake.

"That impact felt good. Really good," Jason muttered, a dark joy crossing his face as he dove down and dragged Captain Marvel out of the crater.

The universe was vast, but few could survive a full-power punch from Jason. Carol was one of them. Jason was relishing this; it had been a long time since he’d been able to cut loose and beat someone with everything he had.

It felt incredible.

Jason used Captain Marvel as a literal punching bag, raining down blows infused with terrifying energy. Carol’s powers were weaker than Jason’s, she had a single stone, and her understanding of how to use them was amateurish compared to his.

The deficit in all three areas led to a complete one-sided slaughter.

"It’s over. She’s no match for him!" Tony whispered, despair clouding his face.

"Should we help?" Thor gripped his weapon.

"Don’t be stupid. Look at that crowd." Tony pointed to Jason’s cheering syndicate. "The second we move, they’ll swarm us."

"So there’s nothing we can do?" Thor asked.

"I think we should slip away while we can and find another way," Loki suggested, sensing the shift in the wind.

Thor and Tony hesitated. But before they could decide, Jason was finished venting. He was ready to end it.

Captain Marvel was blasted through the air once more, smashing into a cliffside before collapsing in a broken heap at the bottom of the valley. Jason descended from the sky, knelt beside her, pried her hand open, and snatched the Space Stone.

"It’s over. She lost! Move, now!" Loki shouted.

There was no time for debate. They had to retreat. But as they turned to flee, they slammed into a shimmering spatial barrier.

Harley teleported in front of them, a cruel smirk on her lips. "You think you’re going anywhere? In your dreams."

The syndicate moved in, forming a tight circle around the heroes, looking at them like livestock in a pen.

A spatial portal opened, and Jason stepped out, dragging the unconscious Captain Marvel by the hair before tossing her onto the dirt like trash.

"So... are you going to surrender quietly? Or do I have to help you?"

Thor’s face twisted with rage. "I am the Son of Odin! You can kill me, but you will never see me kneel!"

Clap. Clap. Clap.

Jason applauded slowly. "In that case, let me grant your wish."

The syndicate immediately backed away, giving Jason space. With a thought, a sphere of energy condensed in Jason’s hand, growing larger and more unstable by the second.

"Last chance. On your knees, or die."

The Avengers stood their ground, their faces set in grim determination. Except for Loki, who looked significantly less enthusiastic, they were the type who would rather die standing than live kneeling.

"Fine. I admire your persistence. So... goodbye!"

The energy sphere streaked forward, detonating in the center of the group.

BOOM!

The Stark Base was instantly swallowed by a sphere of brilliant white light. A second later, the light shattered.

Thick black smoke billowed upward, the roar of the explosion deafening, and the ground shook as if the earth itself were being torn apart.

The syndicate floated in the air, watching the destruction.

"Finally. Those bastards were always in our way. It’s finally over."

"Yeah. Time to follow the Boss into space."

Suddenly, Jason’s brow furrowed. He let out a cold snort.

"Ancient One... since you’re already here, why don’t you come out and chat?"

The crowd gasped, spinning around to look, but there was no sign of the Sorcerer Supreme.

"I’m bored of your tricks." Jason’s pupils bled into a deep, reality-warping red—the power of the Reality Stone.

Under the crimson glow, the world peeled back like a painting, and the Ancient One appeared abruptly before them.

"Jason. It’s been a long time. Welcome home."

Dressed in her yellow robes, she stood alone against Jason, her face as calm and unruffled as a still pond.

Jason nodded, glancing at the massive crater below. "Since you’re here, I assume they escaped."

"What do you mean?"

"Heh, don’t play dumb with me. You used your little magic trick to whisk them away, didn’t you?"

The Ancient One shook her head. "To be honest, no. I didn’t save them. My only task was to stop you."

"To make you act as a distraction... Was it your disciple?"

"Sharp. Yes, my disciple has already taken them off-world."

"I’m impressed," Jason smiled. "Ten years ago, you kicked me off Earth. Today, you’re kicking them off Earth. As the Sorcerer Supreme sworn to protect this world, you certainly seem to love retreating without a fight."

The Sorcerer Supreme held the Time Stone. If she wanted to leave, no one could stop her. Jason had no choice but to try and goad her.

"The truth is... I never intended to run." The Ancient One held out her hands, a golden mandala appearing before her.

"Heh. Even better. Once I kill you, the final piece of the puzzle will be mine."

The words hadn’t even finished hanging in the air when Jason charged.

With five Infinity Stones in his possession, Jason was the undisputed god of the universe. The Ancient One, who had once toyed with him like a child, now seemed fragile and insignificant.

She cast illusions; the Reality Stone shattered them. She tried to manipulate his mind; the Mind Stone held his psyche like an anchor.

She used mirror images; the Soul Stone identified instantly.

She tried spatial magic; the Space Stone locked the dimensions down tight.

She tapped into the Dark Dimension; the Power Stone obliterated the energy before it could form.

Magic was powerful, but its source was finite. The Stones were infinite.

The only thing Jason feared was the Time Stone. Yet, as they fought, even as she fell into a desperate disadvantage, she never used her ultimate weapon.

Jason frowned, a sense of unease creeping in. He decided to test her. His pupils flared with a deep purple light.

In the next instant, the Ancient One’s body began to crack like a porcelain vase.

Jason’s eyes widened in shock. "You... the Time Stone isn’t on you!"

The Ancient One stopped. She sighed, a look of weary resignation on her face. "Stopping you is no longer my responsibility. I am tired, Jason. It is time to pass the burden to the next generation."

"You know I’ll find them."

"Perhaps. but I am certain they will come looking for you."

Jason let out a contemptuous snort. "As long as I can get rid of you, I don’t mind letting them rot for a few more days."

He stepped forward, his eyes glowing with an intense orange light.

"Against others, death is enough. Against you? I’m going to grind your bones to ash and tear your very soul into fucking shreds!"
