Chapter 188: Being Thankful
"Okay," Marcella nodded. "I’ll talk to Tony about this and handle it appropriately, Uncle," she smiled. Uncle Karl’s face relaxed as she agreed.
Obviously, Uncle Karl said that because he cared about her. Maybe, her father would have said the same if he was alive. Marcella was not offended although she was a little disappointed Uncle Karl cared for what others talked about her. Then again, isn’t that an expression of love?
She didn’t have to talk to Tony about it. If it was that widespread, Tony would already know about it. If he didn’t ask her about it, then it means he was not disturbed by such rumors. She said that just to pacify her uncle.
The car ride was silent after that.
"Did Paul have Dad killed, Uncle?" Marcella asked breaking the comfortable silence.
Uncle Karl stared at the front for some time. "We all assumed it was Paul. Now you say the Mellon fellow is involved. We don’t know how long he was involved. Paul had no benefit getting Don killed..."
"Dad was doubting him. Isn’t that why he sent Mark Paulo to Paul?" she asked.
Karl pondered for some time. "Don asked Mark to testify against him. Mark knew what to say and what not to say. After Don’s death, however, Mark became distant and... less open. I thought he was there because Paul was trusted by Don but... I knew something was up when Paul started to exclude you. I stopped trying to contact Mark and he didn’t reach out to me either. I heard your husband met him once..." he shrugged.
Marcella leaned on the seat. She had no idea what was going on anymore. Tony talked about the politician and now with Andrew Mellon’s involvement, everything is getting only more and more complicated.
They reached the hospital. Marcella patted Chris’ shoulder. "Are you free now?" she asked.]
