Chapter 135: Making of a Leader
"What can I do?" Beatrice asked, her eyes filled with doubt. Her hands shook seeing the gigantic man wearing uniform on the ground.
What can a mere woman do against a man in power?
The sheriff was squirming on the ground and yet he didn’t give up. Beatrice heard him mumbling cusses. He was planning on killing them all.
Naomi had joined Marcella and helped the battered Debby inside the house. "We should help her first. I’m calling the Commissioner," Marcella said.
Beatrice heard her. She saw Marcella handing over Debby to Naomi and looking into her purse. Something dawned on her.
Why should she be afraid when she has Don’s daughter with her? That lady-like woman saved Debby from that monster without caring about anything. She believed Marcella would finish what she started. The least she could do is to stop being afraid and do something; however small it might be. There is one guy, but there are three of them. They can stop him if they work together.
"Stop!"
She rushed to the man and pulled out the walkie-talkie from his belt. The sheriff grabbed her ankle. He grunted as he tried to pull her down. Beatrice kicked his hand and helped herself out of his hold.
The journalists who were taking pictures till then came and helped Beatrice tie him up. Seeing the commotion here, the women who were peeking from behind the curtains, slowly got out of their house. One by one, they came and surrounded the sheriff.
Beatrice looked at the sheriff’s face. He was shouting at everyone and hurling abuses. But under the façade of courage, she saw his hands trembling.
