Chapter 131: A Liaison
A week after the shootout, the police commissioner asked for a meeting with Marcella. Tony asked her to go alone as he had other work to do. He didn’t tell her much, but she could understand that there was trouble in the congressman’s office.
Marcella went to meet the commissioner. He had asked her to meet him in a school track ground where he coached in his free time. Marcella had heard a lot of good things about the commissioner. She didn’t mind going to meet him in a gang-controlled area.
He was not corrupted like the others and he had to turn a blind eye to everything that was happening in his department; he had to protect his family.
This was the first time she met with Commissioner Brian Logan.
She expected a dilapidated school but it was not as bad as she expected. The corridors were dark and the walls were cracked. Some of the boys there passed comments among themselves, laughing at her. One of the other coaches rebuked them making the boys laugh.
Marcella didn’t mind them. They were just kids.
The other coach joined her and brought her to the track field. Commissioner Logan was by the track field with a stopwatch and a whistle. The trsck uit he was wearing did nothing to hide his belly. Although he was a little pudgy, he looked good for someone in their late fifties.
Logan was shouting at a young lad to run faster. A lot of profanities easily escaped his mouth as he shouted at the boy. Marcella was not a stranger to hearing profanities and she observed the boy.
He had a very large gait. As Logan riled him up, his speed increased. He looked like a charging cheetah. She could see why Logan was hard on that boy. He had a great potential.
"Yes! You did it, boy! You beat your record!" Logan shouted and rushed to the sweaty boy and hugged him close. "You are getting better!" Logan rubbed the boy’s head.
Marcella smiled seeing their interaction. The harsh scolding was forgotten and the boy was all smiles and appreciative of the coach.
"You know what to do," Logan said and the boy nodded with a smile and ran laps.
