The wedding ceremony was conducted with the bride and groom doing the three bows, one to the heaven, one to their parents and one to each other.
Xing watching them remembered the day Chenglie and her did the three bows. She didn’t realise what that was then... But he did, didn’t he? That guy, tricked me into marrying him! She smiled and her eyes started to cloud and she controlled herself from crying.
The bride was sent to the bridal chambers and the banquet started with a separate hall for the family. The Emperor was with her brother playing some drinking games with Zhong Huojin and some other men from the other noble families.
Xing noticed Lady Zhong and naturally went to her side to sit. MingXue didn’t attend the wedding because she had a serious morning sickness and she was told by the doctors to rest at home.
It was hard for Xing to see the elegant Lady Zhong who looked like she had now given up taking care of herself. She had aged a decade and she looked frail and dull and Xing started advising her the same way she advised her to take care of herself and how her sons would still want her to be healthy and want her to raise their children and all. Lady Zhong patted Xing’s cheek and smiled accepting what she said.
"You’ve grown up!", Lady Zhong said smiling, "I’m glad". "Seiren said you visited his grave first thing after you got back after the war", she added, "He would be really proud of you... He always was...", she patted her head.
Xing could understand how much Lady Zhong misses that Oldman by her mentioning him at least once in each sentence and the way she tried to hold back from talking about him but her inability to do so.
Ah! The pain she must feel for her to live alone without the one who had held her hand through thick and thin all these years! To suddenly lose all that warmth a spouse would give! Won’t she be reminded by everything around her that once belonged to him that he is not here anymore?
Xing felt her scalp go numb thinking what she would do if anything happens to Chenglie. She’d prefer to die first than watching him die and she won’t live even one second more than him...without him..!
"Tanako seems to be suitable for the Huang family", Lady Zhong told her. She seemed to be kind and noble.
