Unaware that he had glimpsed her balance, Hera swiftly closed the app after confirming the transaction, satisfied to see the amount deducted from her account. She assumed the guy’s astonishment stemmed from her covering Dave’s share of the bet.
Dave stepped forward, concern etched on his face. "Why did you pay for it yourself? I could have covered your portion too." He pouted, looking as if he had endured a great injustice. As a man, it stung to think he couldn’t even take care of his woman.
Hera leaned closer, whispering, "Don’t worry, I’ve already taken care of our portions."
"What?! You paid for me?!" Dave exclaimed, his voice rising and drawing the attention of everyone around them.
Hera’s attempt at secrecy had quickly turned into an unexpected public announcement.
Hera facepalmed, unsure whether Dave was being silly or intentionally trying to let Milly overhear. After all, Milly had just subtly called Hera a gold digger.
If she heard that Hera had casually paid $2 million for both of them, it would be like a slap in the face.
It would clearly highlight the irony of Milly’s earlier snide remark, as she relied on her brother to cover her portion while Hera was perfectly capable of paying for herself—and even for her date.
