Yunfeng and Shao took off toward the rising black smoke, their feet pounding against the cracked pavement. From the warehouse, it had seemed close—almost like a short sprint.

But as they ran, reality hit them like a truck.

"This is way farther than it looked," Yunfeng wheezed, gripping his knees for a second.

Shao, barely winded, side-eyed him. "Seriously? You have superpowers and you’re out of breath?"

Yunfeng straightened and shot him a glare. "My flames don’t make me a track star, asshole."

They darted behind an abandoned car, pressing themselves against its rusted frame as a dozen zombies ran past, disappearing into a nearby alley.

Shao glanced over at Yunfeng. "I still don’t like you, by the way. You broke my best friend’s heart and left him pregnant."

Yunfeng tilted his head up with an amused smile. "Good detail to know while we’re running for our lives together."

Shao rolled his eyes. "Just stating facts."

The street ahead cleared. They took off again, silent, fast, focused. But after a few minutes, Yunfeng suddenly stopped.

Shao skidded to a halt and grabbed his wrist. "What the hell are you—"
