Chapter 124 - Uneven distribution
After hours of driving, the monotonous hum of the engine was abruptly interrupted by the loud growling of their stomachs. The noise was so sudden and jarring that Jai groaned dramatically, rubbing his belly like he had just been starved for days.
"Okay, okay, we need to stop. I can’t drive on an empty stomach," he whined, already pulling the car over to the side of the road before Yunfeng could protest.
Yunfeng exhaled, leaning his head against the window, his expression somewhere between exhausted and unimpressed. "You act like you’ve been driving for days. It’s only been a few hours."
"Still! My legs are stiff, my back hurts, and—ugh, never mind. I gotta pee." Jai unbuckled his seatbelt and practically leaped out of the car, heading toward a patch of overgrown bushes a few feet away.
Yunfeng stayed in his seat, arms crossed, watching as Jai disappeared behind the shrubs. The night air was eerily still, and aside from the distant rustling of leaves, there was nothing but silence. He turned his gaze toward the road ahead—dark, stretching endlessly into the unknown. The farther they traveled, the more abandoned the world seemed. It was unsettling.
Jai came jogging back, rolling his shoulders and stretching his arms as if he had just completed some great athletic feat. "Man, I didn’t know driving long distances was going to be this tedious..." He let out a dramatic sigh before climbing back into the driver’s seat.
Yunfeng, still gazing out the window, turned his head slightly and shot him a dull look. "It’s not the drive that’s tedious. It’s your car."
Jai’s mouth fell open in mock offense. "Excuse me?"
"We had so many cars in your basement. Why did you take this thing?" Yunfeng gestured at the old, somewhat beat-up vehicle they were currently stuck with. The seats were lumpy, the air conditioning barely worked, and every few miles, the engine sputtered in protest as if it, too, wanted to give up on this journey.
