Chapter 38: Dylan’s possessiveness
Ethan was speechless momentarily. Since their teenage years, he had noticed Ava following Dylan crazily and eventually married him. Yet now, she was determined to leave it all behind.
Ethan said nothing, his mind racing. He had suspected their strained relationship but hadn’t anticipated things had turned this serious between them. He searched her eyes, looking for any sign of hesitation, but Ava’s gaze was resolute, her decision final. She wasn’t the same woman who had clung to Dylan. This was a new Ava—stronger, determined, and no longer willing to endure the pain.
"I don’t know what happened between you two, but I’ll always support you," he said, trying to comfort her. "And about this attack—those responsible need to be punished. I’ll handle it."
Ava’s response was swift and firm. "No, Ethan," she said, cutting him off sharply. "I don’t want Dylan to come after you. He is ruthless when he thinks someone is against him, and I can’t let you get hurt."
"But I can’t just stand by and pretend I don’t know anything," he argued. "The person involved might be close to Dylan, but I’m not afraid of him. I can protect you."
Ava shook her head. "I don’t need you to handle this, Ethan. I already have someone working on it."
Ethan’s brow furrowed, suspicion creeping in as he caught the underlying meaning in her words. His eyes narrowed as realization hit him.
"You... You talked to that Baker guy, didn’t you?" His voice sharpened with disbelief and anger. "Ava! Are you out of your mind? Nicholas Baker is Dylan’s arch-rival!"
Ava didn’t flinch. Instead, she held her ground, meeting his gaze with steady resolve. "Yes, I spoke to Nicholas," she admitted. "I know who he is, Ethan. But he is not involved in the Baker family. He is a self-made man -smart—more than capable of being an ally. If we want to survive in this business world, we need someone like him."
