Strongest Incubus System

Chapter 391: The Second Door

Vorn’s smile disappeared completely when the cold created by Damon crossed the chamber in a rhythm different from the one imposed by the silver threads. It was not an uncontrolled explosion or a wave capable of freezing everything indiscriminately. Damon circulated Qi through his own meridians, compressed the energy inside the Heavenly Ice Body, and released only short pulses, each separated by an interval of his choosing. The threads attached to the walls tried to follow, but they had been prepared to respond to the Heart, not to a human will capable of changing the tempo.

The first pulse froze the connections near the well. The second reached the metal supports of the mechanism and locked two gears before they completed their rotation. The third traveled through the chains restraining the old man, reducing the pressure on his arms and neck. Damon did not try to break them immediately. Any sudden movement could make the structure discharge all the accumulated energy into the prisoner’s body.

Vorn noticed that and regained part of his confidence.

"You still think like someone who needs to save everyone. That is exactly why Seraphine can predict your movements."

Damon kept his eyes on the mechanism.

"You talk too much for someone whose bell just broke."

Vorn opened his hand. The cracked object broke apart into fragments, but none of them fell. Small green threads emerged from his gloves and passed through the pieces of silver, keeping them suspended around his arm. The doctor did not need the entire bell. Each fragment functioned as a surface capable of receiving and returning vibrations.

Ester advanced toward the restrained man, but Damon raised one hand without looking back.

"Do not touch the chains yet. They are connected to the well."

"I can see that."

"Then look from farther away."

She gave him an irritated look but obeyed. Ingrivid positioned the knights near the side entrances while one of the miners examined the chamber’s structure. The traitor remained restrained in the corridor, his wrist broken and the needle removed. There was no longer any immediate threat behind them.

Vorn moved two fingers.

The bell fragments vibrated at the same time.

The pressure struck Damon from the front. It produced no audible sound, but made his teeth ache and drove the dark blue lines on his arm up to the base of his neck. Vorn’s mark recognized the command, opened the path toward the memory, and tried to pull his consciousness away from the mine.

Snow appeared over the chamber.

For an instant, Damon saw the fortress gate in place of the well. The guardian in white armor remained on the other side, motionless, holding the sword before the body. Vorn remained visible through the image, like a poorly positioned shadow cast over the snow.

Damon did not reject the vision.

He did not enter it either.

He kept both places before his eyes, separating the artificial cold of the mark, the presence of the memory, and the true beating of the Heart. They were three different pressures trying to use the same path inside him. Until that moment, Damon had treated them as one threat. Now he could distinguish where each began.

Vorn’s mark entered through the arm and sought the mind.

The Heart reached the root directly.

Xue Lian’s memory pulled neither of them.

It waited.

Damon finally understood why the guardian had not advanced during the previous visions. That figure was not trying to drag him toward the fortress. It merely watched what he would do while other forces attempted to guide him.

"You built your marks over something you do not understand," Damon said.

Vorn narrowed his eyes.

"I studied sealed consciousnesses before you learned to manipulate Qi."

"Then you spent years confusing doors with chains."

Damon closed the meridian in his arm.

The mark remained active, but lost direct access to his chest. Then he opened only the circulation between the shoulder and the hand, creating a false route. The vibration sent by Vorn crossed the blue symbols and found the path Damon had left available.

He turned his wrist.

The artificial cold returned in the opposite direction.

The fragments suspended around Vorn froze from the inside. The doctor tried to undo the green threads, but the energy had already reached his gloves. Blue cracks appeared over the symbols, breaking one sequence after another.

Vorn retreated for the first time.

"Impossible."

Damon advanced.

"Iris said the same thing."

The name struck harder than the cold. Vorn lost concentration for a fraction of a second, and Damon took advantage. He crossed the distance with a short movement, keeping Qi concentrated in his legs, and struck the doctor’s chest with an open palm. He did not release an explosion. He inserted a glacial pulse directly into the symbols on the coat.

Vorn was thrown against the mechanism, but managed to turn his body before impact. A metal plate opened behind him and absorbed part of the force. The green threads attached to the walls contracted, pulling him back into a stable position.

"She is dead," Vorn said, breathing with difficulty. "The mark was activated."

"You really trust your marks too much."

The doctor’s face changed. Damon saw the exact instant he considered the possibility. Iris being alive meant one of his disciples was outside his control, the message sent to Orven was false, and Seraphine might still not know that the map had responded.

Vorn raised his hand to activate another command.

Damon froze his fingers before he finished the gesture.

The doctor shattered the ice with a green discharge and threw three needles. Damon avoided the first, blocked the second with a thin layer over his forearm, and allowed the third to pass close to his shoulder. The needle struck the wall and released a liquid that corroded the stone.

Ingrivid advanced from the flank, but Vorn kicked a lever attached to the mechanism. The chains around the old man tightened all at once. The man screamed, and the well answered with a deep vibration.

Damon felt the Heart preparing another beat.

"Stop!" Ester shouted. "If you break the flow now, he dies."

Vorn smiled again.

"Finally, we have reached the correct choice."

Damon looked at the prisoner. The old man was conscious, although he could barely breathe. The crystalline marks behind his ears glowed in synchronization with the threads. He was not merely a conductor.

He functioned as a regulator.

As long as he remained restrained, Vorn could control how the Heart distributed every beat.

"You intend to force me to keep the mechanism working," Damon said.

"No. I intend to force you to take his place."

Vorn pointed toward the center of the chains.

"The ancient blood opened the first ear. The man is already dying. When he fails, the beat will be released without a filter and split the upper galleries. You can prevent that by entering the circuit."

Ester positioned herself between Damon and the structure.

"He will not."

Vorn laughed.

"Then Arven begins to collapse."

Damon observed the threads, the chains, and the well. Seraphine had once again constructed a false choice. Enter the mechanism and become the conductor she needed, or refuse and allow the mine to strike the territory. The plan depended on the certainty that he would always choose to offer his own body.

Damon had already noticed that pattern.

Now he needed to break it in a concrete way.

"What is his name?" he asked.

Vorn frowned.

"What?"

Damon pointed toward the old man.

"You spent enough time attaching needles to his body. You must know his name."

"That does not matter."

"To you, it never does."

The old man opened his eyes with effort.

"Edran."

His voice was weak but still understandable.

Damon nodded.

"Edran, can you feel when the next beat is coming?"

The man breathed twice before answering.

"I can."

"How long?"

"Not much."

Vorn moved his free arm, trying to reach a second lever. Ingrivid advanced and cut the threads holding him to the wall. The doctor avoided the sword, but lost his connection to half the fragments.

Damon did not wait.

"When you feel the beat, do not resist," he told Edran. "Let it pass through you."

The old man widened his eyes.

"It will kill me."

"No. It will stop feeding the circuit."

Vorn understood before everyone else.

"Do not do that."

Damon opened his hand toward the well.

"You built everything to use his resistance. Every time Edran tries to withstand the pain, the marks trap the energy and return it as a stronger pulse. The circuit does not control the Heart. It controls the man attached to it."

Ester looked at the chains and identified the pattern.

"The symbols tighten when his muscles contract."

"Exactly."

Damon looked back at Edran.

"You do not need to hold back the beat. I will hold whatever escapes."

Vorn threw another needle, this time at the prisoner. Damon raised a narrow wall of ice and blocked the attack. Ingrivid used the opening to strike the doctor’s arm with the pommel of her sword. The bone cracked. Vorn retreated, but remained close to the levers.

The Heart beat.

Edran screamed by reflex. The chains began tightening.

"Release it!" Damon ordered.

The old man closed his eyes.

Then relaxed his arms.

The chains lost part of their tension, exactly as Damon had predicted. The energy crossed the marks without finding the resistance necessary to compress it. The excess left the structure in several directions.

Damon took the rest.

He placed his hand against the floor and allowed the Heavenly Ice Body to receive the wave. He did not pull the Heart into the root. He spread the force across the surface, freezing the moisture in the chamber into lines that traveled over the walls and returned toward the well. The flow entered through his hand, crossed the external meridians, and left before reaching his chest.

The pain was immediate.

The muscles in his arm contracted, Vorn’s lines advanced across his neck, and the vision of the fortress returned with enough force to cover the entire chamber. Damon saw the guardian raise the sword.

This time, the figure did not point toward an enemy.

It pointed toward the ground in front of the gate.

There was a symbol there.

The same central pattern used in the mechanism built by Vorn.

Damon understood that the doctor had not created that structure by himself. He had copied part of the records connected to the Tomb of the First Snow without understanding their original function. At the fortress, the symbol was not used to imprison a conductor.

It distributed a root without allowing it to dominate a single person.

Vorn had reversed the method.

Damon adjusted his own flow.

Instead of holding the energy, he divided it between the lines of ice spread across the chamber. Each wall received a portion. The floor absorbed another. Almost nothing remained for the chains.

The glow behind Edran’s ears diminished.

"Now, Ester."

She advanced immediately. Using a short blade, she cut the symbols on the chains at the three points Damon had frozen. Ingrivid struck the structure with her sword. The knights pulled Edran away at the instant the final link broke.

The old man fell into Ester’s arms.

Alive.

The mechanism was left without a conductor.

The silver threads began vibrating out of control, but Damon had already spread the beat through the walls. There was not enough concentrated force to cause a collapse.

Vorn watched his own work fail.

"You should not know how to do that."

Damon removed his hand from the floor. His skin was covered in cracks of ice and blood, but the root remained intact.

"I did not."

"Then how..."

"I learned while you were trying to force me."

Vorn retreated toward the well. His arrogance had disappeared, replaced by a desperate assessment of the exits. Ingrivid blocked the corridor. The knights protected Ester and Edran. There were not enough threads left to support his movements.

Even so, the doctor smiled one final time.

"You think winning here changes anything? Seraphine never needed this mechanism to survive."

"She needed it to place me at the center."

"You entered on your own."

"No."

Damon slowly walked toward him. His arm hurt, his leg threatened to give way, and every breath seemed to scrape the inside of his chest, but he did not stop.

"I entered the mine."

Another step.

"I found your passage."

One more.

"I broke your rhythm."

Damon stopped in front of him.

"But I never took the place you prepared."

Vorn pulled a needle from his sleeve and tried to drive it into Damon’s chest.

Damon seized his wrist.

The doctor tried to activate the green symbols, but they froze before any command could form. Damon tightened his grip until the hand opened and the needle fell to the ground.

"Iris is alive," he said. "Mael was captured. Sella too. Orven is being followed. The message you received was ours."

Vorn lost color with every name.

Damon continued without raising his voice.

"Nera left the prison. The children left Arven. The map opened and showed a route Seraphine does not know."

"You are lying."

"The first door opened when I rejected the inheritance."

That destroyed what remained of the doctor’s expression.

He knew the phrase.

Damon noticed and brought his face just close enough to prevent any attempt at pretending.

"Then you know what it means."

Vorn tried to break free.

"Seraphine will find another way."

"Probably."

Damon twisted the broken arm until the doctor fell to his knees.

"But you will not be there to help."

Ingrivid approached with containment shackles. Before she could restrain him, Vorn opened his mouth and a green light appeared beneath his tongue.

Another mark.

Damon did not hesitate. He placed two fingers at the base of the doctor’s neck and pulled the artificial cold before the rupture reached the brain. The discharge traveled through his marked arm, but this time he knew the path. He redirected the energy into the ground and froze the symbol from the inside.

Vorn remained alive.

His expression showed that he would have preferred otherwise.

"Seraphine will not erase you," Damon said. "She will hear everything you tell us."

Ingrivid attached the shackles and lifted him.

Ester was kneeling beside Edran, stabilizing the old man’s breathing. When she looked at Damon, the irritation on her face had been replaced by something more serious.

"The lines reached your neck."

"I know."

"You are bleeding from the hand."

"I know that too."

"Your flow is unstable."

Damon looked toward the well.

Without the fragments and without the forced conductor, the Heart had returned to a slower rhythm. It remained awake, but was no longer being provoked by Vorn.

"How long before I fall?"

Ester examined his pulse.

"Not long."

"Long enough."

He walked toward the edge of the well before she could stop him. Cold rose from the darkness in gentle waves, recognizing his presence. The root responded, but Damon did not immediately close the flow.

He listened.

The Heart no longer seemed afraid.

It did not seem satisfied either.

The structure simply remained there, ancient and incomprehensible, awaiting a relationship no one yet knew how to define.

Damon placed his injured hand against the stone.

"You are not coming out."

The well vibrated.

"I am not going in either."

Another, smaller vibration answered.

Damon felt Xue Lian’s memory open for an instant. The fortress gate appeared again, and the guardian slowly lowered the sword.

It was not permission to enter.

It was recognition.

The cold that chooses its path cannot be chained.

The phrase crossed his consciousness, but this time there was something after it.

The second door opens for the one who refuses the sacrifice.

Damon removed his hand from the stone.

The well became silent.

He turned toward Ester, but his body finally demanded payment for everything he had forced from it. His legs gave way before he took the first step. Ester caught him by the shoulder, preventing him from striking the floor.

"I warned you," she said.

Damon placed part of his weight against her.

"But there was enough time."

"You are going to remain unconscious long enough for me to enjoy the silence."

"I am not going into a coma."

"If you do, I will find you just to kill you again."

Damon almost answered, but his vision darkened around the edges. Before completely losing consciousness, he looked at Vorn being taken away, Edran breathing, and the frozen silver threads around the chamber.

Seraphine’s network in Arven was not completely destroyed.

But her doctor had been captured.

Her inspector had fallen.

Her children were beyond reach.

Her map had chosen another path.

And the Heart no longer played to the rhythm she had imposed.

When Damon closed his eyes, he did not find the snow.

This time, he rested.
