Chapter 399
In Akatsuki’s Eastern Outpost.
A rustling sound came from the darkness, and then a small orange-red flame lit up on a nearby candle. The whole room was bathed in a faint glow centered around the flame.
It was less like a room and more like some kind of cave.
A strong earthy smell filled the air. The ground was covered with a simple bed made of sheets and straw.
Sasuke lifted the blanket he was covered with and sat up. He panted heavily and held out his hands.
The warm blood he could feel directly, no matter where he touched, seemed to leave a bloody stain on his hands.
And the life force of Uchiha Itachi, fading away in his hands, his body gradually growing cold.
In the candlelight, his hands were empty. There was only the wound on his palm that he had scraped, and even those wounds had healed a lot.
He suddenly turned his head to look around. It was empty. Apart from the place where he was lying, there was only the wooden table with the candle on it.
It was quite in the style of Akatsuki; they always spent their time in places like this.
Sasuke touched his forehead a bit, feeling a headache. However, it pulled at his own wounds, making him wince.
A flickering shadow appeared on the wall. Sasuke showed no intention of resisting. He calmly turned his head to the side.
"You’re awake now."
Obito entered, not wearing his Akatsuki robe, but a black outfit underneath.
In the dim lamplight, apart from the somewhat amusing orange mask, his entire body almost blended with the darkness.
Sasuke looked at him without much surprise. He already knew this person’s identity.
Although not many people knew it outside, this masked man was the real mastermind.
However, he didn’t know much about this guy and rarely encountered him.
It was less that he couldn’t meet him, and more that Uchiha Itachi didn’t want them to meet, not wanting Sasuke to interact more with Obito.
So, they had few opportunities for face-to-face conversations like this.
"Your injuries have been bandaged for you..."
"Where is Itachi?"
Sasuke looked down, as if lost in thought.
Obito’s words were not important at all. He was alone here, no one else.
Normally, someone else would be here.
Or, when he woke up this time, he should have been able to see someone else.
He didn’t care much about his own injuries. He wasn’t seriously hurt when he fought Uchiha Itachi; it was just exhaustion of Chakra.
Wounds like these were fine even without bandaging.
"...You won."
Obito felt Sasuke’s reaction was a bit off. He paused and said.
This strange state began when Uchiha Itachi died. After Zetsu returned, Obito watched the recordings of the fight between the two brothers several times.
Uchiha Itachi was obviously holding back. No matter the situation, he couldn’t bring himself to kill his younger brother.
However, judging from all his reactions, Uchiha Itachi was at the end of his strength.
He kept spitting blood and his movements had slowed down. It was natural that Sasuke didn’t realize it. In his eyes, Uchiha Itachi was still pressing him hard.
Unavoidable attacks and a forceful attitude, it was more or less that kind of feeling.
Although Sasuke had a premonition, it was obscured by Uchiha Itachi’s strong presence. So, he didn’t expect what would happen next.
In the recording, Sasuke’s attacks appeared much more powerful, like boiling, surging lightning, pressing Uchiha Itachi step by step.
But a very interesting thing was that when Uchiha Itachi was about to fall, Sasuke didn’t deliver the final blow, nor did he feel the slightest fear.
Instead, he directly threw a kunai wrapped with explosive tags at Zetsu, so all the recordings and sounds from Zetsu were gone.
There was also a cloud of dust flying around.
This was almost a deliberate act, practically an announcement that he and Uchiha Itachi had some private matters to discuss.
Or, they had some agreement to make.
And after that, when the smoke cleared and the explosions died down, Sasuke clearly caught Uchiha Itachi and then activated his Mangekyo Sharingan.
The whole thing was quite intriguing, leaving an indescribable feeling.
"I know."
"I mean, where is Uchiha Itachi."
Sasuke raised his dark eyes, and a stifled gloom radiated from him.
He knew he had won, and he should know where Uchiha Itachi was.
But he still wanted someone else to tell him, rather than acknowledging it with his own memory.
"He died. Shouldn’t that be what you wanted?"
Obito felt as if he were about to uncover a secret that he might not even know.
What exactly happened on the day the Uchiha Clan was wiped out.
It was a bit strange that Sasuke came looking for Itachi. Sasuke hated Itachi for the clan’s massacre, but he still managed to find him.
Although not impossible, would one truly progress faster under the guidance of their enemy?
Obito was aware of Uchiha Itachi’s subtle schemes. It was better to keep his distance from Sasuke, no matter who he targeted.
Of course, he would guide Sasuke diligently, but whether Sasuke would appreciate it was another matter.
But this kid did appreciate it, and followed Uchiha Itachi into the Akatsuki organization without hesitation.
The two brothers occasionally showed a closeness that they shouldn’t have, at least not the kind of attitude one should have towards the killer of their clan.
Was this vague feeling about to be revealed now?
As I wished, I never thought that.
Sasuke pursed his lips and secretly clenched his back teeth. His ears buzzed.
He wished he was dreaming now, or that Uchiha Itachi’s face would suddenly appear and solemnly tell him this was Tsukuyomi.
But after Obito said that, none of it existed. This was reality, this was fact. Uchiha Itachi was dead.
How did he know that guy Uchiha Itachi would use death against him?
Sasuke stared intently at the ground. His eyes ached intermittently, but no tears flowed. The corners of his eyes felt like they were burning.
Sasuke was silent for a while, as if he had gone through some internal struggle. He spoke in an almost calm voice.
"Then it doesn’t matter."
The orange mask swayed slightly.
"You should know about Uchiha Itachi. No, about your older brother." Spoon.
