Gu Zi didn’t plan to linger any longer. She walked out with Chen Xi, her mind still turning over the words of the man.
Jiang Nan and that woman were supposed to be good friends, yet she had never heard her mention the deceased once.
On the contrary, when Jiang Nan spoke of the woman who had passed away, she seemed almost indifferent, as if they weren’t even close. It struck her as odd, this inconsistency, this strange undercurrent in their conversation.
By the time they reached her doorstep, Gu Zi parted ways with Chen Xi, ready to head inside, but then a voice called out from behind, halting her.
"Hey, Gu Zi, how did you end up coming through that alley?"
Gu Zi froze. Turning, she saw Jiang Nan standing there, and a shiver ran down her spine. She couldn’t quite place it, but something about Jiang Nan made her uneasy, a creeping fear that she couldn’t shake.
Yet she kept her composure, putting on a calm smile as she offered a casual excuse. "Jiang Nan, I was just showing my classmate around the area. We passed by the back alleys of a few courtyard houses. It was all so quiet, so we decided to head back quickly."
Jiang Nan stepped closer, her gaze sharp. "Gu Zi, I’d suggest you stay away from those courtyard houses back there. It’s deserted, and a beauty woman like you should be careful. It’s dangerous."
