Chapter 38: Just Coming Back to Live (2)_1
"How was it that he had suddenly returned?
While Xia Wan’an was lost in thought, she heard the sound of footsteps coming from outside the dining room.
Without thinking, she quickly reached for the soup in front of her on the table and gulped down half of the bowl. After she was sure she wouldn’t leave any trace, she put the bowl back on the table.
Just then, the figure of Han Jingnian appeared at the entrance to the dining room.
As Xia Wan’an turned her head to look at him, from the corner of her eye, she saw the note she had written on the table. Seeing that the ink of the words had not yet dried and was still a little noticeable, she hurriedly reached over to wipe away the oily smear. Having done that, she then tried to feign indifference as she turned to look at Han Jingnian, who had now entered the dining room, and managed to give him a calm smile, "Oh, you’re back?"
Surprisingly, Han Jingnian responded with a single "mmhmm", before his gaze fell onto the table.
He had seen her acting flustered. She seemed like she was trying to hide something, but apart from some oil stains, he couldn’t see anything on the table...
An unfinished word, possibly "Wei," next to a half-eaten bowl of soup... and two sets of chopsticks. Why did she have two sets?
Seeing Han Jingnian fixated on the second set of chopsticks, Xia Wan’an quickly offered up, "There were two pairs that had fallen on the ground..."
Then, after a slight pause, Xia Wan’an added, "Have you... had dinner yet? Would you like..."
Before she could finish speaking, he interrupted her, as always, his voice indifferent, "I already ate."
