Chapter 916: Chapter 916 Rebuttal Chapter 916: Chapter 916 Rebuttal “Sister!”
That day, Su Xiaobao, who had not appeared until then, suddenly visited the shop of Su Yunjin and her siblings. It was Su Xiaobao’s first time at Su Yunjin’s shop.
As soon as Su Xiaobao arrived, he found everything novel and even wanted to try the wine, only to be scolded by Mrs. Shen, “At such a young age, you should know better. Is wine something you can drink?”
With his spirits dampened by the scolding, Su Xiaobao hung his head in dejection. However, Su Zhongshi looked at Mrs. Shen with a smile, “Xiaobao may be young, but where is it written that grown men don’t drink wine? If Xiaobao wants to try, letting him have a sip won’t hurt.” If it were any other kind of wine, Su Yunjin definitely would not have agreed to let Su Xiaobao have any.
Drinking alcohol is not child’s play, but the wine at their shop was fruit wine, such as loquat wine, green plum wine, and grape wine; all of which were edible. Fruit wine can be consumed in moderation by both adults and children without issue.
Su Yunjin poured a small cup of loquat wine for Su Xiaobao, “Mother, let Xiaobao have a little bit! It won’t do any harm,” Su Yunjin said.
Mrs. Shen no longer objected. Thus, Su Xiaobao drank a cup of loquat fruit wine poured by Su Yunjin. This was Su Xiaobao’s first-ever taste of wine.
Previously, when Su Zhongshi and Su Muze would drink, they never allowed Su Xiaobao to join, leaving him with nothing but envy. Now, having tasted his first fruit wine in life, the little guy was beaming with joy.
Su Yunjin asked Su Xiaobao with a smile,
“Does it taste good?”
Looking at Su Yunjin, Su Xiaobao licked his lips and muttered, “Sweet.” Indeed, the loquat wine was sweet. When Su Xiaobao said it was sweet, Su Yunjin and the others exchanged smiles.
Su Xiaobao had been going to school for a few months. In the past, all he knew was catching crickets and playing with mud. Now, having read and attended school, he could recognize characters and even recite from the Analects. Su Yunjin casually tested him with a question and to her surprise, Su Xiaobao responded without hesitation.
“Not bad at all. It seems our little Xiaobao is quite the scholar material!” Su Yunjin praised as she patted his little head. Beaming with pride from his sister’s compliment, Su Xiaobao’s eyes sparkled.
Mrs. Shen shook her head, “Yunjin, whether your brother is cut out for studying is too early to tell. We’ll have to wait a few more years to see.”
The things Su Xiaobao was learning at school were simple, and being able to recite the Analects was not indicative of much.
Mrs. Shen had seen kids in the village who could recite the Analects get praised for their intelligence, only to end up not even becoming a Scholar. Besides, Mrs. Shen didn’t really harbor any expectations for Su Xiaobao to pass the imperial examination and become a high-ranking official. She sent him to school following Su Yunjin’s suggestion, simply wishing for him to learn a few characters and not be an illiterate.
