Chapter 558: Evil Begets Evil (4)
At Longfu Morris’s home, his wife argued with him daily, and his daughter wouldn’t even call him "Dad". He couldn’t go anywhere because he was under investigation, making it inappropriate for him to seek out Jane Auclair and her daughter.
His in-laws, once they learned of the situation, would occasionally come round to help their daughter scold Longfu, their son-in-law. Despite their ordinarily refined demeanour, their abuse was no less crude than that of village gossips once they let go of their inhibitions.
Naturally, Longfu did not retaliate, nor did he dare to. Mrs. Morris impulsively wanted to divorce him instantly, to send him packing with nothing. It was only with the persuasion of her parents that she was dissuaded from doing so.
Indeed, even if he had no affection left for his wife, he could not divorce her, certainly not in the current circumstances.
Only if his family stood by him would his superiors believe that all his previous deeds were accidents, and that the report he had made was a mishap.
He had not financially supported Joanna Auclair, it had just been an accident and the woman had gone on to have the child. Over the years, he had been extremely careful to not send Jane Auclair and her daughter any money.
So, thankfully, he had not left any glaring evidence, and there was no proof that he had kept a mistress. At most, he was guilty of a common male infidelity, not of an improper conduct.
Who can guarantee that one won’t make a mistake in their lifetime? He had made one, while some had made several.
Moreover, Oscar Brown’s mother, Henry Lawson, was not as attractive as Joanna Auclair. Joanna, after suffering for many years, paid attention to preserving her appearance. His wife, on the other hand, had put on an excessive amount of weight, with an excess of flesh all over her body. Sharing the bed with her, he had no sexual desire whatsoever.
