"Auntie, let’s wait for the Village Chief to come back," Carolline Ruiz raised her eyebrows, not having seen the Village Chief yet.
Before, it was always the four of them eating together. She would chat with Auntie about daily life, and Gavin Campbell would drink wine with the Village Chief. They all got along quite well.
"No need to wait for him. I’ve put his food aside for whenever he comes back. Let’s eat first, who knows when he’ll return?" The Village Chief’s wife said carelessly.
Carolline and Gavin tried to insist on waiting, but they couldn’t convince the Village Chief’s wife. So, they had to eat dinner with her first, and the Village Chief still hadn’t returned by the time they finished.
They waited a bit longer, watching the local news on the Village Chief’s black and white television. Soon it was eight in the evening, and Carolline was getting tired and yawning.
Seeing this, the Village Chief’s wife immediately went to the kitchen to heat water for Carolline. She hadn’t taken a bath in the past ten days, just doing simple body washes. The Village Chief’s wife suggested waiting for warmer weather to bathe, and Carolline agreed. She was also worried about her special condition making it easier to catch a cold or something. If that happened, she wouldn’t be able to hide her pregnancy secret any longer.
Just as Carolline was soaking her feet, she heard the Village Chief come back, and he really did bring a guest with him.
Gavin was the first to go out. Carolline didn’t want to join, but then Gavin excitedly knocked on her door, "Carolline, come on, come out quick! Guess who’s here?"
"Who is it?" Carolline had just wiped her feet and was about to pour out the foot-washing water. Seeing Gavin’s excited expression, she was quite surprised.
