They stayed like this for about ten minutes when the noise outside rose again, signaling the return of the two boys who had gone to buy cake.
Jiaojiao cautiously glanced at Duan Xi, curious and testing, but didn’t expect to meet his gaze, which had been on her all along. Startled, she quickly withdrew her gaze, her face turning crimson again.
Duan Xi, melted by her shy and soft response, reached out and pulled her back into his arms, locking her in, kissed her tender cheek, and comforted her, "Don’t be afraid."
Jiaojiao instinctively wanted to say she wasn’t afraid, but as she looked up and felt the warmth in Duan Xi’s gaze, she chickened out again. Honestly, she was a bit scared, but mostly embarrassed and flustered.
Duan Xi had calmed down enough by then. Holding her, he rose from the sofa, placing her on the ground. He tidied her clothes and hair, then led her to open the door and step outside.
Outside, a dozen or so people looked their way at once. An outgoing-looking guy smiled and asked, "Boss, who is this? Aren’t you going to introduce her?"
