A snicker came from the back seat, and beside him Shu Jiao also gave him a disapproving look. Ruan Jianguo immediately felt he had lost face, but one can’t snap at the wife, though the son is fair game.
He lectured Ruan Jie at length, luckily Ruan Jie was used to it, or else he would indeed start questioning his life choices.
The group continued on their way to Changling, chatting and laughing merrily.
The winter roads were tough for driving. The train was scheduled for just after five in the evening, and the Ruan family had set off at nine in the morning. A journey that normally took three to four hours had today taken them five or six.
Fortunately, the train was scheduled for later, otherwise, they wouldn’t have made it at all.
When they arrived in Changling, it was a little past three in the afternoon. Everyone was tired after sitting in the car for so long, and Ruan Jiaojiao was especially drowsy, so once they got off the car, Ruan Jie carried her on his back.
Since two drivers had come especially to drop them off, Ruan Jianguo definitely couldn’t let them leave empty-handed, so they found a restaurant near the train station to eat.
The train station’s restaurant was both expensive and of poor quality, nowhere near as good as the restaurants run by the Ruan family, yet many people were still dining there. Ruan Jiaojiao had little appetite after sitting in the car for half a day. She nestled in Shu Jiao’s arms, barely eating half a bowl of porridge before she couldn’t eat anymore.
Fortunately, they had brought plenty of snacks with them, so not having a good meal now wouldn’t leave them hungry on the train later.
After dinner, it was already past four, and fearing they’d be late to catch the train, they hurried to the station. Although they had quite a bit of luggage, with Ruan Jie and Xiu Xi, two young men, plus Ruan Jianguo, handling a couple of hundred pounds of baggage was no problem at all. So, they let the drivers head back first to avoid the increasingly difficult roads at night.
Ruan Jianguo had originally planned to book two rooms at the guest house for them, but the two insisted on not staying and left soon after dropping off the Ruan family.
