Xiaobai became anxious, its body frozen stiff, awkwardly twisting itself into a spiraling shape – quite enchantingly so.
Ruan Jiaojiao saw the icicles on Xiaobai shedding noisily and felt so worried about it feeling cold that she urged, "Xiaobai, go to sleep. Only come out when you’re warm. Don’t come out again this year. We’re going back to Beidu for the New Year’s celebration, and we will return after the holiday."
Upon hearing that they were only going to Beidu for the New Year and not thinking of returning it, Xiaobai felt relieved. It wanted to nuzzle Ruan Jiaojiao’s little head with its big one, but, remembering its own icy body and the Demon lurking with greedy eyes, it discarded the thought and slipped out of the window.
Ruan Jiaojiao got up and watched it leave through the back door. Although it was already dark, the snow’s whiteness made visibility not much worse than during the daytime. She saw Xiaobai bump into something, then a tree fell, something thudded to the ground, landing on the snow-covered twigs, emitting cracking noises...
Ruan Jiaojiao withdrew her gaze to see Xiu Xi still by her side and said, "Brother Xi, you should go to sleep too. We need to get up early tomorrow."
Xiu Xi nodded, tucked her in properly, and then picked up the Lingzhi on the ground before leaving.
The next morning, Ruan Jiaojiao was awoken by the cold.
A pair of cold hands were placed on her face, startling her awake. Opening her eyes, she saw Ruan Jie, who was also on holiday, smiling at her with a big white teeth-filled smile that seemed especially punch-worthy.
Ruan Jiaojiao felt his cold hands moving towards her neck and screamed in a panic, "Mommy!"
